Was Gooch as good as Canavan?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Both were fantastic footballers and deserve to be mentioned in any discussion of all time greats. Today good luck to the Gooch he certainly brought great enjoyment to the whole GAA world over the past 15 years.

Gaa Sophies Choice ,
impossible to choose possibly saw more of Gooch due to increased TV coverage over the years , Gooch appeared to have the longer career at the top, are last two factors relevant when discussing talent ?
Some on here probably never saw Mikey Sheehy , Declan Browne, Frank McGugian a young P Joyce who had as much talent as anyone to ever take to the field .
Would say Gooch was one of the most talented and successful players of all time , wish him all the best what ever he chooses to do in life as long as its not coaching.

No brainer Canavan.Gooch a magnificent player but didn't like to mix it went missing in a lot of games. The game in the 90s when Canavan was in his prime was a lot more physical and Peter took and gave it.Always remember his bravery playing Compromise Rules and the dust up with Akermanus.
He had the heart of a lion.Bottom line Canavan always delivered whereas Gooch didn't.

I would choose Graham Geraghty over both .
But opinions are like blowing wind, everyone else's stinks apart from your own.

Cooper miles ahead of Canavan. Such a question.

I seem to remember Canavan being fairly marked out of it in the 1996 All Ireland Semi.

You don't remember the 1996 semi too well then. Canavan started off brilliantly then was taken out of the game with a late hit and had to continue on one leg. An injury which kept him out of the game for months after. You can't call that being marked out of a game.

"Marked out of it" you mean taken out of it by McDermott....if it were todays refs Meath would have had at least 3 men lined that day.

The 3 greatest forwards I've seen are 3 Kerrymen, in no particular order except maybe chronological;

Mikey Sheehy
Maurice Fitz
Gooch

Anyone saying its a no brainer either way doesn't have a brain

The same goes for someone comparing Geraghty to either player, Geraghty was a great player but a totally different kind of player to the 2 lads mentioned.

That's pure Joe brollyism about Cooper going missing in games. If he did it was down to Kerry being under pressure generally and the ball not going in to him. The man was top scorer in the championship or very close for over a decade. That kind of consistency is just unheard of. He may have had a rare off day but I'd bet Canavan had plenty too if you really analysed their careers.

As for who was the better player I'd find it hard to pick one over the other myself.

Exactly what happened to Gooch in 2005 when he was tearing Tyrone apart. Apparently that's 'going missing'

Canavan was kicked and booted out of that semi final, he was deliberately targeted. Tyrone learned a sore lesson that day and it served them well a few years later.

Canavan was better

Gooch was class but sometimes had bad games on the big day, don't ever remember it with PC
Canavan is retired longer so not as fresh in the mind, but Jesus that man was ridiculous

Gooch was one of the best, PC was THE best
