FBD League final: Galway win in Big Apple

October 20, 2008
An understrength Galway lifted the FBD Connacht Football League title following a comprehensive victory over New York in Gaelic Park yesterday. Galway......4-15 New York....1-13 Forced to field without the International Rules duo Michael Meehan and Finian Hanley, as well as several other college and club-tied players, Liam Sammon's charges still proved much too strong for the Exiles whose preparations hadn't been helped by the resignation of two managers within a short time of each other. The writing was on the wall for the home side after just five minutes when a Cormac Bane goal and a point from the returning Nicky Joyce gave Galway a 1-1 to 0-0 lead. The Tribesmen went on to lead 3-8 to 1-5 at the interval thanks to further goals from Nicky Joyce and Joe Bergin. New York added 0-8 to their tally in the second half, but a second major from Bergin made sure the cup stayed in Ireland for at least another year.
