Murroe Boher Weekly Notes

June 17, 2013
Senior Team
Murroe Boher senior hurlers were out on Saturday night in The County Championship in Caherconlish against Knockainey, this is the third year in a row that we have faced Knockaniey in the Group Stages. On what was an unseasonal cold and windy night a fine crowd made its way to Caherconlish, our team was well prepared and the warm up was intense and lead by the senior members of the panel, Kevin Tobin, Seamus Hickey were commanding the drills the team and were very focused on the task to come.

Ger Hegarty called in the team and had some final words before the boys retired to the dressing room, late injury scares to Pat Tobin, Timmy O Brien were accessed, Pat came through a late fitness test but Timmy unfortunately would not be able to Play.

Both teams returned for the 7.30 throw in, both Seamus Hickey and Pat Kirby let fly on the ball, Seamus broke it but the referee impeded his progress and trough no fault Seamus was adjudged to foul the ball, this lead to the first free and set up what was to be a shoot out between Pat Kirby from Knockainey and Sean Tobin from Murroe Boher from placed balls. Pat duly pointed, next score was also for Knockainey when there number 10, Marc Cleary pointed from play.

Declan Kett registered our first point from play before Sean Tobin converted a 65 and contributed the next 2 points from play, Murroe Boher were starting to settle but Knockainey had their own game plan which involved very good puck outs to P Kirby who feed number 10 and number 15, Padraic Barron, who caused plenty of trouble for William Clossey with the good diagonal ball he was receiving.

Knockainey were starting to open us up at the back and only a well read interception from Diarmuid Byrnes where he travelled from half back to the right corner back position to cut out a definite Goal Chance which resulted in a free on the 21 for P Kirby to convert, next attack saw four players go up for a direct ball into the square,W Clossey come out to bat the ball only for it to come off J Dervan's Hurley and break into the path of P Barron, quick thinking from W Clohessey who pulled him down prevented the Goal. William took his yellow card but kept Murroe Boher in the Game, the resultant free saw a bizarre incident where P Barron rose the ball only for number 10 to strike it over the bar, the referee disallowed the score and gave a free out to Murroe Boher, with the game finely poised, P Barron converted 2 points from play and a P Kirby free while Sean Tobin converted a monster free into the wind from 80 yards, and notched up 2 more frees before pointing from play after being set up by Seamus Hickey, this was the point of the game.

Half time saw the score at Murroe Boher 8 points to Knockainey 7 points, with the wind to come and after weathering all that was put up to our team, the selectors made the changes with Mike Dee coming on for Declan Kett in the full forward line. The second half opened brightly, with Diarmuid Byrnes setting up S Tobin with a pass up the line for Seanie to turn beat 4 opposition players and slot the ball over the bar, this seemed to lift our team, Willie Tobin in goals stopped a certain point from going over the bar, brought it down layed it off to Seamus Hickey, who at this stage was covering the ground from our square to the opposition 40 with abandonment, Seamus delivered it to Seanie who pointed, at this stage Murroe Boher stretched the lead to 4 points while Knockainey number 10 and 13 converted points from play, Sean Tobin converted 2 more frees only for P Kirby to register 2 pointed frees and 1 from play, Knockaniey number 13, Jason Lonergan, converted from play to leave the minimum between the teams, it was now all to play for by both teams with 17 minutes left, which ever team wanted it the most was going to take the spoils.

Seamus Hickey returned to centre field for the resulting puck out only to be greeted by P Kirby, a skirmish ensued with all half backs and half forwards coming in to have there say, the referee thought best way to deal with the situation which was ready to ignite was to get on with the game and did so, we do our talking on the field, the ball broke hard at midfield with a smart delivery into M Dee in the corner coming out to meet it and slightly off balance,Mike delivered a deft hand pass to the on running Sean Tobin who beat the full back and hitting across the goal slotted the ball into the bottom corner, similar to his county endeavours against Tipperary, Seanie struck, Murroe Boher now regained their 4 point lead and now had to focus on closing out the game.

Our more experienced players then showed there metal, J Dervan at full back was outstanding, the half back line of Diarmuid Byrnes, John O Connor, Kevin Tobin used all their experience to hold a solid line and were the foundation that held Knockainey at bay, Seamus Hickey helped by Evan Walsh won the mid field battle which was fierce.

Pat Walsh won some great ball in the last 7 minutes, leading to setting up P Tobin for a point and then with confidence struck for a point from play himself which showed how much work he has put in all year travelling from the west to make training and has a great attitude for his club team.
The Supporters were driving the team on with encouragement until we were all silenced with the last puck of the game, Knockainey received a free on the D, P Kirby stood over the ball, our centre back line, lined up together to impede a direct shot on goal, with 17 players inside the 21, P Kirby's shot reached the goal line only to be saved by Kevin Tobin who had been all day in the right place, saved , controlled and came out with the ball and the Victory, Game Over .

Murroe Boher went into this playoff match versus Cappamore full of confidence after two comprehensive wins over S Liberties and Pallasgreen in the later stages of the league. However, even after hurling well for the hour, ended up with a trimming on the scoreboard. A controversial goal after a few minutes seemed to upset our goalie and a few soft goals followed soon after. We were always chasing the game as a result of these goals, which led to us forcing the play and causing needless errors. Steven Casey, David Quigley, Richard Laffan, Dan Ryan, Andrew Hickey, David Duggan & Paddy Hurley were best for Murroe Boher. The championship and Brian Butler cup are only around the corner for us to make amends for our poor display in the playoff. Best of luck to Cappamore in the league final who were fully deserving of their win playing a direct style of hurling. Score line Murroe Boher 0-11 Cappamore 5-08.
