City G.A.A. Notes
Junior A Hurling:
Ballybrown travelled to Rathbane Tuesday May 21st to play Old
Christians in the D.J. Daly Champion Hurley's Junior A Hurling League.
After a bright start they led by three points but Old Christians
replied with two points of their own. Andrew Cliffe hit the visitor's
first goal. Midway through the first half Ballybrown's Andrew Cliffe
took a side line cut some forty metres out and his effort went
straight and true for a fine point. Old Christians had a goal of their
own following an error in the Ballybrown goalmouth as a defender
deflected a long range effort past his own keeper. From that point on
it was one-way traffic for the Clarina side who lead by 1-13 to 1-05
at the interval. The second half was well contested by both sides but
Ballybrown struck for their second goal courtesy of Killian Gavin,
this saw a goal reply from Old Christians when Dave Clohessy scored
his side's second goal. Ballybrown were well on top at this stage and
Robert Davoren came to the fore with some great hurling and driving at
the Old Christians defence at every opportunity. His reward was a well
taken goal and a point. Evan Loftus finished the goal scoring with a
late close range free. The final score was Ballybrown 4-24 Old
Christians 2-10. Ballybrown: Cian Hedderman, Richie Quinn, James
Hartigan, Thomas Cronin, David Hannon, Brian Quinn (0-02) 1f, Kevin
Foster, Evan Loftus (1-06) 1-6f , Robert Davoren (1-01), Robert
O'Grady (0-01), Patrick Hartigan (0-01), William Stanners (0-01),

Junior A football:
Patrickswell were visitors to Clarina on Monday evening May 20th in
the Morrison's Bar & Lounge Ballysimon Road Junior A Football League.
Games between these clubs being close neighbours always carry a
competitive edge and this game whilst not an epic in the football
stakes it had all the attributes that good old fashioned club rivalry
needs as a spectator sport. Early exchanges were even but the accuracy
of Tom Clancy from two placed balls was the difference between the
sides until David Woulfe popped up for a well taken goal to see
Patrickswell take the lead. Tom Clancy with two more pointed frees and
a point from William Stanners saw Ballybrown back in front again and
they never relinquished this lead. A penalty by Clancy was brilliantly
saved but he followed up to fire to the net. Declan Normile
contributed a fine individual point and that goal scoring machine
Killian Cliffe found the net before the interval. Patrickswell had two
pointed frees from David Woulfe and a well taken score from Brian
O'Sullivan to leave the interval score Ballybrown 2-6 Patrickswell
1-03. The second period of play saw a superb Goal by Killian Cliffe
and the same player has a fine point from a tight angle on the
sideline. Thomas Cronin and Tom Clancy had Ballybrown's other second
half scores. Patrickswell were tenacious and never gave up as Shane
Dinage pointed from the penalty spot with a shot that only just went
over the bar. The introduction of Dean Shanahan (no stranger to
Ballybrown football) saw him convert two fine points and indeed he was
a constant thorn in the Ballybrown rearguard. Dean Gillane, Gerry
Murphy and Brian O'Sullivan had points for Patrickswell to leave the
full time score Ballybrown 3-09 Patrickswell 1-09. Ballybrown: Seamus
Lyons, David Downes, Eamonn Lyons, Christopher Gleeson, Kevin Foster,
Declan Normile (0-01), Robert Davoren, Paul Fitzgerald, Thomas
Cronin(0-01), Connor McCarthy, Andrew Cliffe, William Stanners(0-01),
Killian Cliffe(2-01), David Guerin and Tom Clancy(1-05) 1-0 pen 0-04f.

O'Riordan, Kelvin Lynch, Dara Bennis, John Fitzgerald, Brian
O'Sullivan, Aaron Gillane, David Woulfe, Gerry Murphy, Patrick Woulfe,
Shane Dinage and Darragh Dundon. Subs used: Dean Shanahan, Peter
Clarke and David Ryan.
Junior A Hurling Semi-Final.
Ballybrown and St Patricks contested the first semi-final in the D.J.
Daly Champion Hurley's Junior A Hurling League. The first saw half saw
some very poor hurling as both sides struggled to hit any kind of form
or consistency. The half time score was Ballybrown 0-04 St Patricks
0-02. On resuming the second period of play Killian Gavin scored a
goal for Ballybrown and they had a lead of five points mid-way
through, but Saint's were not found wanting and they battled back to
get a draw in the closing minutes. Both sides have more to offer by
way of hurling and this will be expected of these players when they
meet in the replay next Friday evening in Rathbane at 7.30pm.
St Patricks: Mark Kiely, Mark Phelan, Dave Geary, David Sheehan
(0-1f), Daragh Cronin, Wayne Cronin, Kevin Maher, Jason Mullins, Barry
Doherty, Mike Geary (0-1), Andrew Hannigan (0-03f), Keelin Stephenson,
Brendan Mullins, Gearoid Hegarty (0-04)1f and Niall Phelan.
Ballybrown: Nigel Mann, Richie Quinn, David Hartnett, James Hartigan,
David Hannon, Brian Quinn (0-1), Thomas Cronin, Robert Davoren, Kevin
Foster, Robert O'Grady, Patrick Hartigan, William Stanners (0-01),
Andrew Cliffe, Evan Loftus (0-04) 2f, and Killian Gavin (1-00). Subs
used: Connor McCarthy for Robert O'Grady. (Picture shows Ballybrown
Captain Evan Loftus with Match Referee Martin Doherty and St Patricks
Captain Wayne Cronin before the match in Rathbane).
The second semi-final in the D.J. Daly Champion Hurley's Junior A
Hurling League saw Na Piarsiagh play Patrickswell and the North city
side started off well with a point early on from Aidan Hennessy.
Patrickswell had two points from Paul O'Grady and Declan O'Grady not
to be outdone hit a goal and a point soon afterwards. Damien Quigley
hit the city sides first goal after a mix up in the Patrickswell
defence as he latched on to a ball to fire past a helpless keeper.
Patrickswell had three points from Aaron Gillane (f),Geoffery Foley
and Dara Shanahan. Na Piarsiagh had a point again from Quigley and a
string of five pointed frees from Mike Brougham and a final point
from Pat Gleeson. Patrickswell had two further pointed frees from
Aaron Gillane. Half time score Na Piarsiagh 1-08 Patrickswell 1-08.
The second half as in the first semi-final was dominated by the windy
conditions as a number of frees were missed. Na Piarsiagh started well
with a point from Tomas Downes. Geoffery Foley stroked over a fine
effort and this was added to by Ger Murphy but that man Quigley was
having an influence on proceedings that belied his years and he had
another point from play. Declan O'Grady had a point for the Well side
and when Ger Murphy got a final touch on a loose ball to score his
sides second goal. This had most observers thinking that the north
city side were on the way out. Mike Brougham scored a point to leave
three between the sides and when Damien Quigley kicked a point with
time almost up to leave a two point gap. Damien Quigley got the final
score and what a score it was as he received a hand pass from the goal
mouth and buried the sliothar to leave the Patrickswell side stunned
and the Na Piarsiagh followers in Rapture with the final result. The
highlight of this game was the clash between Ciaran Carey and Damien
Quigley two legends in the modern game for their clubs and fro
Limerick, whilst Quigley came away with a tally of 2-03 Ciaran had a
fine game also and it is great that these two clubs have these fellows
in good shape and passing on the skills to the next generation.
Na Piarsiagh: Evan Condon, Josh O'Halloran, Paul McNamara, Kevin
McNamara, Aidan Hennessy(0-01), Paul Downes, Brian Buckley, Pat
Gleeson(0-01), Kieran Bermingham, Mike Brougham(0-06) 5f, Kieran
Keogh, Kevin Hodnett, Evan Egan, Damien Quigley(2-03), Tomas
Downes(0-01).

Mahon, Chris O'Grady, Eoin McNamara, Paul O'Grady (0-02), Dara

two from frees. Both teams exchanged points from placed balls before
the interval leaving the half time score Pallasgreen 0-10 Caherline
0-05. In the opening twenty minutes of the second half Caherline

Munster GAA Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final: Limerick 0-08 Cork 3-17
Three first-half goals, including two from debutants Brian Hurley and
John O'Rourke, helped Cork to a very comfortable 3-17 to 0-08 win over
Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday evening. Cork led by 10
points at the break following the three goals, scored between the 24th
and 31st minute, and they added to their big lead throughout a low-key
second-half. Cork will now play Clare in the Munster semi-final at
Cusack Park, Ennis, on June 16. Cork led 3-04 to 0-03 at the break
thanks to those three goals in the space of seven minutes towards the
end of the first half. The opening 20 minutes were cagey, but Cork
emerged from them 0-04 to 0-02 in front, with Damian Cahalane and
Daniel Goulding both kicking two points apiece. The first Cork goal
came on 24 minutes when debutant Hurley punched to the net following a
long ball in. Four minutes later, another debutant, O'Rourke nipped in
for a second goal to make it 2-04 to 0-02. Limerick were stunned, and
although they replied with a point from Eoghan O'Connor, it wasn't
long before a third Cork goal completely took the sting out of the
game. It came from Pearse O'Neill, who finished a wonderful team move
to the net. That left Cork in total control going in at the interval,
and the game was as good as over. Nonetheless, Conor Counihan's side
continued to add scores after the restart, and 15 minutes into the
second half the score was 3-10 to 0-04 following points from Paul
Kerrigan and Hurley (2). Limerick managed four more points before the
end, but the final quarter was effectively shooting practice for Cork,
as they added scores with ease and emptied their bench to cruise into
the semi-finals with a massive 18point win.

organising team Michael Fitzgerald, Ollie Mann and Tom Lavery.
Munster Junior Camogie Champions
Limerick camogie continued their winning ways, annexing the Munster
Junior Cup with a gutsy display. The match was played in Ballygiblin
yesterday, Limerick playing with a stiff breeze in the first half.
Player of the match Karen O'Leary led the way from the half back line,
with Dymphna O'Brien on the end of Limericks scores. Cork got the
first score of the game within a minute with a point from play.
Limerick quickly replied with point from Aoife Wilson. Brid Hannan
then scored three points without reply in the next nine minutes
(1-45', 1-free) In the 10th minute Cork got a goal which Limerick
immediately cancelled with one of their own by Lisa O'Keefe. This left
the score Limerick 1-04 Cork 1-01. Cork got another point but then
Aoife Wilson raised the green flag (13 minutes) followed by a point
each from Noreen Barry (14 min) and Dymphna O'Brien (15 minutes) These
were the last scores by Limerick in this half but Cork hit purple
patch coming back strongly with 5 unanswered points (0-04 play 0-01
free). Half time score Limerick 2-06 Cork 1-07.
Limerick was first to score in the second half with a point from play
from Elaine Kennedy, giving Limerick a three point lead. However,
Cork through Niamh McCarthy and Amy O'Connor sent in some great ball
to a forward line that Limerick marshalled well through Noreen Barry.
But they clawed back with two points (1-45'1-free). Limerick 2-07 Cork
1-09. Limerick introduced subs after ten minutes Martina McMahon for
Lisa O'Keefe, Katy Hurley for Katie Hennessey. Three points from
Limerick on 16 min (Martina McMahon) 17 minutes (Noreen Barry) 26
minutes (Brid Hannan) gave Limerick a four point cushion. Donna
Mulcahy was introduced for Elaine Kennedy. Cork finished strongly but
Limerick defended well just allowing Cork the final score of the game
-a point in the 29th minute. Cork managed only three scores in the
second half, and the Treaty County secured their Munster title to add
to their national league title. Captain Sarah Crotty lifted the Burns
Perpetual Cup on behalf of the victorious Limerick team. Final score
2-10 to 1-10
