Portlaw crowned 2013 Junior Camogie Champions
Bushey park on Saturday last hosted the final of the Junior Camogie championship. The match saw Portlaw play Tallow in a very entertaining final which Portlaw won on a score of 3-08 to 1-07.
This is an achievement for Portlaw who re-formed their Junior team this year and were unbeaten in all their matches leading into this final while Tallow had to beat Gailltir in their semi-final play-off.
Conditions on Saturday afternoon were ideal for camogie with the Autumn sun shining on the players and supporters of both teams.
Right from the throw-in, Portlaw pressurised and for the first 10 minutes much of the play was in the Tallow half. Portlaw were a point up after 2 minutes and extended their lead when Ciara O'Connor scored their second point after good work by Amy McGrath out on the left wing after 8 minutes.
Tallow had few attacks in the early part of the match but those that they did could not be converted into scores. Tallow's best opportunity of the early part of the first half came when Ciara Hallihan fired in a low shot after Aine McCarthy had been fouled and in the resulting play were awarded a free 20 meters from the goal but unfortunately could not be converted. Tallow continued this pressure and had another wide before Jackie Forbes scored their first point of the match from play. Shortly after, Tallow's Aine McCarthy made a powerful direct run at the Portlaw defence but was ably dealt with by the Portlaw defence to prevent her from getting a clear shot at goal. During Aine McCarthy's next run, she was fouled and Ciara Hallihan slotted over to level the match at 2 points apiece with 5 minutes of the first half remaining.
This seemed to focus the Portlaw's players and in the remaining minutes of the half scored 2-01 to no score. Portlaw's forward always looked threatening when they received play and the first goal came from the hurley of Orla Kelly, followed shortly by a point from Emily White and the half finished with another goal from Ciara Cronin. The halftime score stood at Portlaw 2-03 to Tallow's 0-02.
Right from the commencement of the second half the Tallow players upped their workrate and were rewarded when Aine McCarthy scored a point. Tallow were exerting a lot of pressure on the Portlaw defence but could not convert the possession into scores. Portlaw's next opportunity for a score was from an Ailish Dunphy free but was wide but was immediately followed by a Mary-Claire Dunphy point from play and then Portlaw's third goal when Siobhan Boylan's ground strike ended in the net.
Portlaw were leading by 3-04 to 0-03 but Tallow continued to compete and were rewarded with a two more points while Portlaw scored a free from Ailish Dunphy's hurley.
As the final minutes of the match were played, Tallow scored 1-02, all scored by Ciara Hallihan, two were frees and the goal was scored when a powerful low ball ended in the net. During this same period, Portlaw also scored 3 points, Orla Kelly scoring 1 point and Ailish Dunphy the remaining two.
When the final whistle was blown, Portlaw were champions by 3-08 to 1-07.
