mickey newman this year last year c mcguiness and david lyons all im saying is the obyrne cup is the place to test players. if you are a good team not like us and playing in division 1 and have nothing really to be worried about u can test players in the league.we need to be in division 1 to be contesting decent teams so you dont muck around in the league

Mickey Newman was given his chance. Both Banty and EOB have called him into the Panel. He was involved with the panel before christmas but opted off it to focus on college studies and sigerson football. He's heading away this summer I believe so thats his reasons for not being back on the panel.
Nothing to do with him not getting a chance

Cormac McGuinness couldnt commit last year due to work commitments in the mines. He made that clear at the time, he was also getting game time last year, and the year before, as he is again this year.

David Lyons was given game time last year was he not? Gallagher was brought in this year and just looks to be the one who's been chosen. There can only be one keeper so its not like a forward or back who can be thrown in late in games in any of 6 places. Theres not as much scope with the Keeper.

Yes Jinxie, I would agree with what you say about a goalkeeper. It is however, disrespectful to EVERY goalkeeper in the county to have a midfielder as a sub keeper, somebody who actually doesnt and has not lined out in goal.
Also, with regards to Newman, personally I believe the guy is a class act and would not be going anywhere if there was anything thought of him by management. Just my opinnion. Management is about creating a balance with players as well as knowledge of football. Different plaers need to hear different things and egos etc. have to be taken into consideration in order to get the best panel of players possible to play.

I agree with you re: JCL as sub keeper. That baffled me as much as anyone, and then used him out field in O'Byrne cup games meaning their was no sub keeper.
In fact we dont have anyone on the panel who plays in goals with their club at all, although Gallagher has ample experiance.

Harro is.
Don't think Dalton is.

I see Smyth from Bective was in the team photo below in Galway but no mention of him in the squad listed in Navan the last day. I'm assuming he's there or there abouts

You're getting rather childish here tackleberry, wasn't my intention to hijack this thread and go off topic - time to move on

Looks a perfect statement to me. The lad's from Bective, you are what you eat, not what the poachers decide. Is Darren Fay from Dunderry?

Davy Lyons definitely did not drop himself off the panel last year. Banty discarded with his services after he played the O'Byrne cup with Athlone. He requested Lyons to play with Meath in the O' Byrne Cup to which Lyons agreed but his college registered him against his wishes which was their perogative as they had first call on him. Davy went to England for a while during the winter but is now back home and playing with Sench in their last few games.

Re: Davy Lyons

Lads I seem to remember a similar drive in Meath to have Davy Lyons on the Meath team after Senchalstown's success in '09 and having played some heroic stuff he rightly got a chance to impress under O'Brien in the O'Byrne Cup. Against Dublin in Navan (you might remember it was a draw). Lyons' kickouts had Meath under serious pressure as he couldn't hit past 50 metres, he was replaced by O'Rourke and Meath battled back for McGuinness to kick for a replay. There was a massive crowd in Navan that night and I think it was also was shown live on Setanta. People seemed to stop insisting he should be in goal for the county again until lately. Maybe that has to do with Murphy returning from retirement and retiring again but I thought following that night that Meath people had accepted this part of his game (kick out) wasn't at inter-county level?

One ironic thing from that night was that Davy Dalton gave an exhibition of speed and high fielding from corner back, broke his hand and I don't know 2 years later if he's started another competitive game?
