Just wondering what the feeling is for next week's match and what team Banty will play against Sligo.You would have to think there will be changes from the Laois game.Sligo have a pacey team that could cause problems for our defence and by all accounts should have beaten Donegal.Would guess the following team

Yeah I'd go with the team being along those lines alright. Not sure what he'll do with midfield, but the rest of it should be much the same anyway.
Sligo will be a tough test for us but we really need to be winning every home game. Last weekend was 2 points dropped so we need to get the campaign properly going this Sunday. Hopefully a win and a decent performance.

Menton at No 6 and Gilsenan in the corner would be the only spots I would be unsure about. But we might as well try players out now, give them 2/3 games and see how things work. If this were the second round of the championship, I might be a little bit more unforgiving.

Glad to see Brian Farrell getting a run up front though. For such a natural point taker, it would be great to see him coming through again. And with Ward, Queeny, S Bray and D Bray, we seem well set up front......so much so, that we could even move our No 11 out to 8 or 9. Well the league is for experimenting in.

I think there will be one or two changes to the team this weekend. I'd like to see Brian Menton at mid field.
Sligo will be a challenge. Meath shud easily beat them and gain their first two points of the league.
I'd like to see Meath win all their home games as they have a few harder teams to play as the league goes on.

I really hope banty tries out a few new faces in the backline, a few new young lads like Dalton, Mcgill, Menton can only be better than what was there the last day, and maybe try Harrington in the half back line, where he plays with the tones, and play Meade/Crawford/Gillespie in midfield, cause if he keeps picking conservative teams playing failed players from the last few years we will end up relegated and a short championship campaign.

Would agree Tailteannpark that changes are needed in defence and midfield.Anyone in Portlaoise the last day could see that.What was worrying was that we conceded 1-14 and still 4 forward subs and a midfielder were the changes.We played better against Dublin in Parnell and should have kicked on against Laois.Apart from Paddy Gilsenan there are no real changes to last years team which is another worry as we weren't good enough last year.Hoping for a big improvement this week-end.

Are the Brays even fit, thought David's injury would keep him out of league football for a while? Also Banty might be having doubts as to whether Cian Ward is mobile enough for his system, considering that our forwards as a unit tend to fall short when it comes to work-rate?

I was hoping he would persevere with the twin towers up front, Joe and Shane, with a nippy corner-forward playing off them, thought they caused Dublin a lot of problems when the delivery was good. I know a lot of supporters don't like it but when you have a lad like Shane O'Rourke who's 6'5'' and can kick with both feet then play him in the inside line.

Agree that Sligo's pace and cuteness could causes us a lot of bother, has McGill lost his place now? I understand that both King and O'Brien are great running the ball out of defence but they're loose enough markers at times.

From the games against Dublin and Laois - I got the impression that there was a new system being implemented (or at least trying to be)..

Our corner backs appeared to be overlapping the wing backs and joining attack whenever possible.
This worked well for large parts of the Dublin but didnt really against Laois, and left us exposed in both games at times.

Now I could be way off the mark here and such play might not have even been intentional - but if it was - then 1. King and O'Brien are ideal for this role and 2. It will take more then a few weeks for such a new style to gel / work..
In fairness though - you would imagine that Dalton / McGill would tighten things up - but might lack the scope for getting forward of the other two
As to whether or not it works - we will not know until later in the year..

I will say though - that irrespective of what system / players are being tried out - we should be beating Sligo in Navan.

King's played in the full-back line before and he's good under the high-ball so that makes sense but O'Brien's too loose a marker to play anywhere other than wing-back so ideally I'd have at least one sticky back in there dealing with any danger man, McGill fits the mould.

Not sure attacking corner backs is the way to go, better with 2 tight markers there and sort out the half back line with wing backs that are pacy and can defend and attack, the thoughts of king and obrien as attacking corner backs would give most meath fans heart attacks.
