MFL: St Pats overcome Oldcastle
February 20, 2012
St Pats Adam Mulvaney
Victory was deserved by the home team in this encounter between Oldcastle and St Pat's.
St Pats gave a satisfactory performance, distributing the ball well and taking some excellent scores. The first half saw St Pat's with good possession and made good use of the ball. Within five minutes , the Pat's had registered 1-1. Oldcastle responded with a point, which turned out to be their one and only point and the only score from play of the first half. Fifteen minutes into the half and Oldcastle were awarded a penalty, which they duly converted into a goal. Oldcastle upped the tempo and seemed to settle more and challenged Pat's for every ball. The short kick out by the Oldcastle goalkeeper put their own backs under pressure, easy pickings for the Pat's forwards. The Pats found their stride and took another goal and five points before the half time whistle. Half time : St Pat's 2-6; Oldcastle 1-01.
Weather conditions had worsened by the start of the second half. The strong bitter crosswind was now accompanied by biting rain. Oldcastle came out fighting in the opening twenty minutes. It took 10 minutes for the first score to register, which was a well taken goal by Oldcastle. Adam Mulvaney responded with an excellent point at a tight angle from the left wing. This was followed up with a cracking goal by Sloggett. The adverse weather seemed to suit Oldcastle better, sending over another 2 points. Sloppy defending by the Pats saw them duly punished with another goal by Oldcastle. Only four points between the teams. The rain ceases and Pat's seem to gather themselves and Mulvaney storms through the Oldcastle backs to bury the ball in the back of the net again. Final Score : St Pats 4-10; Oldcastle 3-03.
Another good win to compound on last week's result. Some very good individual performances from the Pat's but those individuals show potential as a good team going forward in this league.
