The Late Nancy Power
Mrs Nancy Power was widow of the late Matty Power, acknowledged as one of Kilkenny's greatest hurlers.
She became suddenly ill and passed away. She was 86. On the day before her death Mrs Power had been visited at her Phibsboro, Dublin home by her daughter, Ann Byrne, New Orchard, Kilkenny.
The legendary Matty Power won four All-Ireland senior titles with Kilkenny, in 1922, 1932, 1933 and 1935.
He played in the famous All-Ireland final against Cork in 1931 when it took three matches to decide the champions.
The drawn game and two replays were credited with helping to make the game of hurling so popular in Ireland.
For years the Power family ran a boarding house at Gardiner Place Dublin called Kilkenny House.
It was a particularly popular venue on the weekends of Kilkenny hurling matches in Dublin.
Mrs Power was a member of the Walsh family of Bonnettsrath, Kilkenny.
She was a very popular woman who lived an active life.
She is survived by her daughters Ann Byrne and Catherine Fernadez, sister Betty Dowling, Parliament Street, Kilkenny and niece Maura Tyrrell, Meadow Way, Kilkenny.
