Leinster Club IHC: All-Star Hogan reigns as Danesfort win in the rain
All-Star Richie Hogan led the way as Kilkenny intermediate champions Danesfort quelled the resistance of Meath opponents Kildalkey in this Leinster Club IHC clash at Pairc Tailteann on Sunday.
Danesfort …… 0-18
Kildalkey …….. 1-7
Hogan crowned an impressive display with 11 points (six from play) and the Kilkenny IHC champions saw off the Meath senior kingpins.
Kildalkey put it up to Danesfort for long spells, leading twice in the early stages and fighting back to level matters for the third and final time in the 37th minute.
With All-Star defender Paul Murphy prominent at centre-half back and Hogan heading the scoring charge, Danesfort kicked-on.
Ten consecutive points left the board reading 0-18 to 1-5 with 55 minutes gone.
Kildalkey's persistence was rewarded with late points from Padraig Geoghegan and Noel Kirby (free).
A tenacious Kildalkey defence ensured Danesfort didn't get in for a goal. There was never any likelihood that that Pat O'Halloran's men would leak eight goals as they did against Dickboro at Nowlan Park 12 months ago.
Kildalkey were more economical than Danesfort and opened the scoring in the 5th minute when Kirby landed a free from about 55 metres from his own goal.
Seconds later Hogan opened his account from play while Oisin Daly cancelled out Kirby's second free.
In between those scores Daly went close to goaling for Danesfort at the town end when latching onto a Hogan cross.
Stephen Duncan's sole contribution gave Danesfort the lead for the first time and though Kildalkey later regained parity the visitors were never headed again.
Danesfort went on to lead by 0-8 to 0-4 at the break. Gary Kelly goaled for Kildalkey within three minutes after the resumption.
Kirby tied the scores from a free, 1-5 to 0-8. Danesfort made their decisive break and secure their place in the next round against Carlow's Mount Leinster Rangers.
