Peter Smith was a member of the last Midleton team that won the Cork SHC title back in 1991 and derived great satisfaction from masterminding the Magpies' 2-15 to 2-13 win over Sarsfields yesterday.

Victorious manager Smith heaped praise on the character of his players after they bridged a 22 year gap to get their hands on the precious silverware.

"It seemed like ages and ages," he told the Irish Independent.

"I just had a picture there with the cup with Paddy Fitzgerald, who was in charge of us when we won it last. Little did I realise at that stage that when we won it again I'd be in charge.

"These lads are full of character. If you take the hurling out of it, they're proper guys, proper men. That counts for something as well."
