Season 2012 Review

(Oldest Posts First)

With the football season almost complete, I was what wondering people have learned from this year. Many issues come to mind such as the rapid decline in the quality of football and how our senior team has deteriorated so quickly. There was some highs such as seeing the U21s retain the Ulster crown and seeing some of last years team make the break through into the senior panel. I was also wondering what people think should be changed. Im talking about the divisions for next years leagues and the changes to the championship and other competitions such as the minors. I think that the U21 should be moved back to mid June.

We're extremely lucky not to be in Div 4, that's about the only positive you can take from this year.

I would say since Eamon Coleman RIP.

When he was around Cavan were competitive and he got the best players in to the panel and seemed to be building a team capable of winning a Ulster title in a time when Armagh and Tyrone were dominating Ulster.

There had not been a lot to be cheerful about at senior level since.

things have been going downhill since that summers evening in rosscommen in 2005. we were beating bye mayo in the 4th round of the qualifiers. that was not a bad team lads we knocked out donegal and meath. we also gave would be all Ireland champions their toughest game all year where we led 1-7 to 0-7 with 10 to go in a ulster semi final.(don't mention the replay)
since then we have became accustomed to losing and bad performances. we have had some very tough years since. especially in the last 3 or four years where i feel things have gone dramatically downhill. since we started playing division 3 football really. in terms of 2012 it has followed a similar pattern of the last 2 or 3 years. it is a bleak time time in cavan football at the minute however the under 21s are making us hopeful for the future. my memories for the year will be the journey of the under 21s. im started to love the road to enniskillen. i was in thurles for are league game in march and that was a memorable weekend. also johnstons return was very memorable.

Well according to this, Cavan should not even be back training yet ??? Maybe it was the U21's you saw theforgottenman ?

Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Clare, Fermanagh, Galway, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Meath, Monaghan, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Tyrone, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow all exited in July and can return on December 1st

The standard of club football hasn't changed or declined in the past 10 years. What has happened, is that Cavan football has failed to move with the times.

The reason people think the club standard is so poor, is because the game of Gaelic football has revolutionised to the extent that the football we see on TV is streets ahead of what our own clubs are playing. We are 7-10 years behind advanced counties like Donegal, Tyrone, Dublin, Cork, Mayo in terms of our preparations and the way we approach the game, especially when it comes to coaching.

Kids are growing up to be tactically clueless. You can have natural skill in abundance, nobody can teach you that. But having an intelligent playing mind is something we need to teach youngsters from day one and it's not happening. I think the County board should step in and make coaching courses mandatory for all underage coaches.

Lads don't forget the hurling season, the artical I read on the main page shows the effort being put in all over the county. I was just wondering how many hurling clubs in cavan at the moment from u8's to senior could anybody tell me?

Hurling is not going to far really in the county when the senior county final ended in a walk over.
Same story different year we will never see senior hurling again in Cavan when the county stops at minor C level

I believe that's the least of the worries...

Plenty of Underage activity which is the main positive and reaching an All Ireland C final is a good achievement ,... If a little time was given for the senior hurling final it would have been played.

Its been put right at underage. The same has to be applied at adult level.

People need to forget about the negatives and take all the positives as previous posters posted. Hurling is going well!!

In reply to your post I would say div4 is beckoning. I was in waiting for my son the other evening and watched what was training and what I saw was the bad side of it about 15 others from the last panel where there so nose diving big time to div4, I saw another player there watching togged out who did not kick a ball with his club this year.
