Gowna in Relegation dogfight...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I am in shock at the state of affairs in Gowna, Once the strongest clubs in the county both football wise and financially, getting beat by a poor poor Drumalee team, an excuse of a senior team in all honesty. What is going on in Gowna? Anyways well done to Drumalee I suppose!

wat was the score in dat game?? castlerahan bet em off the park on breffni, and they only kicked a point from play against redhills, how they fashioned a draw against belturbet is beyond me..

I wouldn't say a poor poor Drumalee team now, i attended the game today and Drumalee were by far the better team on the day. They even had a player sent off with over 10 minutes to go and still won the game by 3 points. Darragh Gaffney kicked 2 outstanding scores to pull Drumalee ahead.
Anyway in regards to Gowna, i think they will do just enough to beat Lacken in the relegation play-off final. Lavey beat Lacken in the other Relegation match today by 0-09 to 0-08. So i would say Lacken will get relegated to the Intermediate Championship for next year!

Think the score was 1-7 to 1-10. Both Drumalee and Gowna had men sen sent off, Gowna missed a penalty. Im not ridiculing Drumalee.. its just my opinion that they are not strong enough for senior, however they won the game and fair play to them. If Gowna do end up relegated it would be the end for them i feel.

Correct, the score finished 1-10 to 1-07. Sorry yes, Gowna also had a man sent off. Well i think Drumalee also beat Killygarry 2 weeks ago in Breffini Park, and if they had of taken their chances the 1st day out against Cuchullains they could off been in a Senior Championship Quarter Final this weekend, but that's your opinion and your entitled to it.
I also agree with you in regards to Gowna, if they do end up being relegated, that could very well be the end of them!

mystic meg Financially strong? Gowna is a small half parish with a small population and have lost a good few players to emigration and retirement and have limited numbers.Gowna is in debt due to a new pitch and dressing rooms. there going through a rough patch but will be back as strong as ever.

Hoy: what i said is that they used to be the kingpins of cavan football both financially and football wise- they USED to be, A club that could manage to get the late great eamonn coleman as manager had the resources available. I disagree with you as I feel it will be a longlong time before we see Gowna back as a major force. I find it iteresting to see new teams coming to the fore....Kingscourt, Ballinagh, Belturbet, Castlerahan etc...Ths can only be good for cavan football.

mystic meg the late great Eamon Coleman cost Gowna very little because he had a love for football, the people and Gowna in general.

message for Qyeball88 i think tour away with the fairies my friend,,drumalee are a very average team with very average players,,they havent got the committment and there underage structure does not work as they never have any players from drumalee representing the county,,it will only be a matter of time before drumalee are relegated back down to intermediate where they belong with the likes of ballyhaise,,crosserlough,,killeshandra,,knockbride etc....drumalee are the biggest yo-yo team i have ever seen,,,1 good season always followed by 2 very bad season....yous aint got the players or passion to achieve anything at senior level...

I think Gowna will beat Lacken to stay senior and although it could be a while before they win another SFC I can see them staying senior, they have a few players who have given great service to the club but are at the end of their career. Gowna are still very good underage and if they can introduce a few young players each season along with players such as mckeever, pearson and maddens they are as good as most senior teams....after that its all about commitment.

another interesting note is the 4 senior semi finalists are all town teams (add in the improvements ramour and kingscourt have made), it has been said over the last decade that cavan needs its major towns producing better teams to improve the county team....is this starting to happen

Flakester I think its a bit harsh to criticicse drumalee like you just have mate....you say they have no passion...they have won 2 intermediate championships in the last 4 years...admittedly that proves your yo yo point but it takes character to get back to where the got to. I agree that they dont have the players for sure but they do have the heart. Also they played 4 senior championship games this year- won 2 lost 2 so not that bad in fairness.

Mystic meg:that proves my point exactly the only meaningfull thing they have won has been at intermediate level which proves my point they are an intermediate team like the other teams i have mentioned..if they had the heart and passion they wouldnt be relegated every second year from senior championships..yo yo team is what they are..lets be honest here the 2 games they won,,was against a poor killygarry team who were already through to quarter finals and a gowna team that is a spent force..where are the top 2 finishers out of drumalee group all been knocked out next round which further proves my point they are your standard intermediate football team,,with no county players produced from grassroots to county level

Drumalee,

I have great regard for Drumalee. They bring good support & they re supporters alway seen @ county finals & Cavan games. They don t have the pick & have to fight with not alone the gaels. But Rugby & soccer based in their community also.
They ve made great strides with discipline through underage & have some fine footballers comming through.

Winning two Intermediates is massive & shows the ambition of a club. I ve seen them without a few main players & they can be a frail outfit. But still field a team & march on.

don t like the Jersey & withe socks though.

Flakester,

Since 1980 only 7 teams have won the Senior Championship,Kingscourt(9) Cavan Gaels (7) Gowna (7) Laragh (3) Ramor & Mullahoran (2 each) and Bailieboro (1), therefore by your reckoning ,the fact that Castlerahan,Belturbet,Ballinagh etc have won nothing only intermediate titles they shouldn't be in the senior championship.Actually I'd like to know other than the 7 teams mentioned above how many more have actually contested the senior championship final since 1980? As for yo yo teams this title is Denn's without a shadow of a doubt.

ace of spades....the other teams i had mentioned as your typical intermediate teams were ballyhaise,,crosserlough,,killeshandra,,knockbride etc.you missed my comment before that.......its good to see the rest of the other teams like castlerahan belturbet etc coming on and challenging instead of having the gaels,,mullahorn and gowna in the semi finals all the time,,,,i was merely commenting on queball 88 comment where he is saying drumalee are good enough to be in senior when everyone can see there a basic intermediate team,,,not near good enough to be a senior team...

It's some achievement for a small area like gowna to win 7 senior championships since 1980 the same number as the Gaels.I hope they will come good again as they are very passionate about football.
