McCabe hails 'great bunch'

Cavan joint-manager Dermot McCabe was fulsome in his praise for his players after their historic Ulster Minor Football Championship success last Sunday in Clones.

The Blues upset to odds to stun Armagh with a spirited second-half performance at St Tiernach's Park, which ended a 37-year wait for provincial success at this level for the Breffni County, and afterwards former All-Star McCabe hailed the effort of the players, particularly in the second-half.

"The second-half was phenomenal," said the Gowna man afterwards. "I don't think Armagh scored in the second-half and they (Cavan players) were doing just so exceptionally well. Great honesty, work rate, just all the things you want in players.

"Once you're putting that into a game and into a performance, hopefully the result will go your way. I could not and no-one could ask for any more from that bunch of lads, they're a great bunch of lads."

While McCabe insists that the campaign has been one to savour thus far for Cavan, he has quickly turned his attentions towards the All-Ireland quarter-final with Galway which he feels will "be an even bigger game".

"Every game, it's been different men on every day that makes a difference to the team. Football nowadays is a 30-man game. There's 32 men on our panel and they do huge work everyday at training and they all want to be togged out, so it's great.

"It's great. The win over Tyrone meant that we had two more games, possibly this will be an even bigger game and we're going to look forward to that now."

Cavan meet Galway in the ESB All-Ireland MFC quarter-final next Saturday week, July 30, at Pearse Park in Longford (throw-in 3.00pm).
