JFC: Swad claim more junior glory
October 06, 2010
Munterconnaught's Padraig McManus tries to stop Swanlinbar's Christopher Curran in his tracks during the JFC final at Breffni Park.
Swanlinbar played Munterconnacht on Sunday last in the Junior Championship final at Kingspan Breffni Park and came out winners on a score line of 0-16 to 1-8.
These two teams had already meet twice this year, first in the league on Munterconnacht's ground where Swanlinbar were the winners 0-18 to 1-09 and when they meet in the Championship in Killygarry it was Munterconnacht who came out on top by a score of Munterconnacht 2-16 to 0-9 so on Sunday it was a game that both teams and supporters were up for and in a game which ebbed and flowed for an hour it was the West Cavan team who took the Sean Leddy Cup home.
Munterconnacht were first to open the score with a point and added a second without reply. Robbie Prior opened the scoring for the winners with a point and added another to level the score at 0-2 each.
Kevin Brennan put Swanlinbar a point ahead and Padraig Leydon added another to leave the west Cavan side 0-4 to 0-2 in front. Munterconnacht pulled a point back before Mark Cunningham added another point. 'Man of the Match' Gearoid McKeirnan put over another point and from a free Mark Cunningham made sure to keep the Munchies at a distance.
Munterconnacht hit back with a brace of points, but Rory Mc Barron got on the end of a pass from Kevin Brennan and slotted over a point before Swad launched another attack, which resulted in '45' which Chris Curran cracked over the bar and another score from Mark Cunningham had the westerners in a 0-10 to 0-5 lead at half-time.
Munterconnacht started the second-half well by raising a white flag seconds into the resumption from the throw in and this was followed this up by a well-taken goal to leave the minimum between the teams.
A Robbie Prior point followed by another Gearoid Mc Kiernan score pushed Swad three clear once more.
Munterconnacht added another before Robbie Prior struck another pair, one from the left and one from the right both from impossible angles. Mark Cunningham added a further point. A point from Munterconnacht in reply proved to be their last score of the game.
Swad launched another attack and when Chris Curran was fouled and Robbie Prior put over for the final score of the game to seal another junior triumph for the St Mary's club.
Both will meet again in the Division Three final, where the Munchies will be have a chance of revenge.
