Ballymachugh club notes

June 30, 2013
Did you know? Father Anthony Dalton, Ballymachugh club legend, South African missionary worker and all round athlete represented South Africa in the 1969 4000 metres race winning the gold. His mystique was added to when he revealed he trained in the local cemetery. "It was very quiet and level" he replied. Read more on this in the Ballymachugh 125 book………

Each week we will introduce one of the many interesting and diverse personalities of Ballymachugh GFC.

This Week:

Ballymachugh GAA Profiles

Name: Gerry Gill

Age 42

If you were throwing a party and you could invite anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be? Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, Tina Fey

What are you playing on your i pod/cd player? Iggy Pop, David Bowie

Favourite food? Steak & Chips

Favourite drink? I've been known to drink the occasional pint of Guinness

Who would you most like to have a drink with? Johnny Cash!

Pre match superstitions? I always sat in the corner furthest from the door; I always avoided watching the previous match to concentrate on my own game.

What's the last good film you saw? Star Trek II

What's the worst pitch you've ever played on?

Given I nearly drowned in the old Shannon Gaels pitch I should say that, but I never liked the old Lacken pitch

What's your favourite / dream holiday destination? Camping in the Serengeti/ New Orleans

Who's the biggest joker in the teams you play(ed)! for?

Shane Martin was worth two points in every dressing room, great attitude

Gary Miller Baileboro would wreck your head every game.

Who was the worst trainer? Liam Donohoe put more effort into avoiding training than most of the lads did doing it.

Toughest opponent you've faced? Paul Brewster - Fermanagh was tough never stopped running, Gary Coleman - Derry was an incredibly tight marker

At club level Philip Smith Crosserlough, Tommy Smith Denn and Michael Murtagh Baileboro were good footballers and hard as nails but Fintan McEnroe Castlerahan was the best player I played against

Football boot of choice? I usually wore Puma Kings

Best ever performance? At club level Underage V Crosserlough U15 final they had seven county players on a seven a side team and we won

At senior level Championship V Killeshandra in 91 was a good game

The Ulster minor campaign in 89 V Donegal (myself and Flood took them apart) and Derry were memorable matches

One to forget? Two!!

V Belturbet 94 an off the ball tackle from the full back tore my knee ligaments and cartridge in a game we were winning by eight points, he didn't even have the brains to do it when they were level..

The 89 minor semi-final V Derry we were winning by five points with three minutes to go, the manager took off Ray Cole and the corner forward scored two goals and a point in the last three minutes we lost by two, No other team got within ten points of Derry, a crazy decision cost us a possible All Ireland.

When you're playing football in the back garden who do you pretend to be?

When I was a kid I used to try and practice what Matt Connor from Offaly did, he was the best footballer I've ever seen. I also used to study free takers a good bit especially Brian Stafford - Meath.

Football Zone
The Ballymachugh reserve team played Arva in the C championship last Thursday June 27th away. The match finished on a scoreline of Ballymachugh 1 14 Arva 1 7. An excellent win and we are successfully through to the forthcoming semi-finals. Well done lads and one more fixture awaits.

Commiserations to both Cavan senior and minor football teams on their exits last Saturday in Clones from the championship. Performances have been encouraging though.

Our flagship team, our senior footballers are training very hard in advance of the forthcoming championship and will play some competitive challenges in preparation also.

Ballymachugh underage summercamp begins today Monday July 1st and will run for 5 days from 10.00 to 2pm. The nominal fee can be paid on the Monday morning to Norine Mulligan and Peter Mulligan.

Our under 6 and 8 footballers train weekly at 6pm on Fridays on the astro turf. Don't forget your water and gum shield!

The under 13 ladies footballers are training diligently each Saturday morning at 10am.

Our promising under 10 boys footballers train each Saturday morning at 10am under the tutelage of Michael Tynan.

Our footballing ladies under the new management of crafty Paddy Baxter and the enthusiastic senior star Kieran Goldrick are training away. They faced off in the Intermediate championship first round on Sunday June 30th in Ballyheelan against Inny Gaels and were defeated by 4 points. Hopefully the girls will regroup and focus on future league matches. Well done to Lucy, Eilish, Caoimhe and Kelda on another victory against Tyrone in the under 16 football competition for Cavan.

Our under 12 boys footballers enjoyed three wins in as many matches last week the latest being away in Killinkere. Their semi-final was played on Friday night 28th June at home versus Baileboro. In a well contested affair the end result was a huge victory for the home side. A brilliant result for a very talented squad. Watch our Twitter feed for details of the final. Under 13 boys footballers will meet Maghera in the opening round.

Forthcoming Fixtures:

Sun 7th July 2pm BMH v Templeport - Reserve championship round 3.

FRIDAY 5TH JULY Minor league division 3 semi-final Ballymachugh v Lavey 8pm in Stradone
