Ulster club IFC: Lavey book final spot
November 17, 2009
Lavey's Kevin Brady
Lavey 1-14
Fanad Gaels 1-8
The good times continue to roll for Lavey GAA, as last Sunday they produced an unwavering second-half display in Enniskillen to oust Fanad Gaels and book their place into the final of this year's Ulster club IFC.
After slipping to a 1-8 to 0-6 deficit at the end of the first-half, Terry Hyland's men raced out of the traps after the restart and kicked 1-8 of their own while conceding nothing to claim a historic victory which sees them into their a provincial decider at the first attempt.
It was the Cavan champions that had made the better start to the game as well, opening up a 0-4 to 0-2 lead during the first ten minutes, but Fanad hit a good spell thereafter and through Seamus Friel's 13th minute goal they were in front.
Aidan McAleer and Friel put the Donegal men further in front, as points from Darren Jordan and Shane Tierney could only cut the gap down to five for Lavey at half-time.
Within eight minutes of the restart the News Inns side had the difference down to two when Darren Jordan, Sean Maguire and Tierney all struck early points. Kevin Brady and Declan Murphy levelled, as Lavey began bossing their opponents in all sectors of the field.
After that Kevin Brady came up with two well-struck points to put Lavey into a lead that they would never relinquish and when Declan Murphy soloed through for a beautiful score they were into a 0-14 to 1-8 lead heading towards injury-time.
With a minute of normal time remaining Tierney sealed the deal for Lavey when he took a pass from Kevin Brady and netted the ball low past Mark McConigley in the Fanad goal to assure victory and place alongside Tyrone champions Cookstown in the Ulster club IFC decider.
