Rackard League Football Final

Gorey C B S 4-1
Piercestown 2-6

Underdogs Gorey C B S captured their fourth Rackard League A title in a row on Saturday last in sunny St Patricks Park. In fact , were it not for an absence in the 2006-07 season this would have been six in a row !Once again: having an eye for a goal and serious tough tackling , were the main forces to drive them over the line.

Piercestown began in a bright and lively fashion.Mid fielders Conor Firman and Barry O Connor along with Adam Cantwell,Peter Barry and Michael Codd were causing all kinds of problems for their opponents ,Firman scored a cracker of a goal, while Sam Audsley slotted over a free after good work by Codd.Half way through the half the energetic Firman scored a fine point.Codd himself scored a stylish minor also and it was a just reward for his efforts .Gorey;however, though not on top in general play, had their say on the scoreboard too.Tiernan Doyle got his sides first major after great work from the influential Charlie McGuckian.Wing forward Michael Molloy popped over a neat free but it was Stephen Hempenstall's confident penalty that gave Gorey a slender one point lead at half time. Gorey 2-1 Piercestown 1- 3.

Gorey seemed to play in a more determined and confident manner in the second half. This coupled with Piercestown's continued bad luck with frees served to widen the gap on the scoreboard. At one stage in the second 25,Gorey led by seven points.Inspired substitute Reece Hughes banged in a beautiful goal giving Shane Parle no chance.Another passed him soon after ,as a 30m from Hempenstall managed to deceive all in its path on the way to the net.Niall Sinnott and Paul Carton were really beginning to establish their presence on proceedings now.Wing back Cillian Donohue was a brilliant force for his team mates constantly driving forward and putting the Piercestown defenders on the back foot.Piercestown's Rory O Connor kept his charges in touch though with three frees and he provided plenty of nervous moments for Gorey with his attacking play. The stylish Peter Barry hit a lovely goal near the death but it was not enough to secure victory against a Gorey side who had been weakened with the unlucky sin binning of Hempenstall.Gorey's Tom Cleary, Michael Duke and Eoin Molloy put their bodies on the line for the cause and relief was to be the town boys' as ref John Diskin blew the final whistle.
