Crookedwood GAA Notes
Senior B Championship final
Crookedwood 0-14 Fr.Daltons 1-10. History was created on Saturday the 3rd of October, as we won the inaugural Senior B Championship, and became the proud first-time recipients of the Mickey Power Cup. We played forty minutes with fourteen men after one of our top players was sent off, but the lads on the field and the subs that were introduced dug deep to defy the odds and record a narrow victory after a tense game. Fr.Daltons opened the scoring from a free but Shane McGovern replied with a free of his own. Daltons took the lead again after a good team score but once again McGovern drew us level from play. A purple patch from our opponents saw them score three unanswered points as their dominance was rewarded on the scoreboard. A good Barry O’Mara score kept us in touch and then we lost Shane to a straight red after an incident on the sideline. Crucially we scored the next two points, both from Barry and drew level again. As half-time approached Daltons regained the lead with two more points, and seemed to be on top for the majority of the first half, but even after the sending off we were never any more that two points behind. Our opponents put in a serious effort in that first half and we just about weathered the storm, Daltons leading at the break 0-7 to 0-5. It was point for point after half-time as Daltons still held a narrow lead. We drew level just before the water break and with fifteen minutes left it was 0-10 apiece. The game was there for the taking, and three points in five minutes saw us take the lead for the first time in the game with ten minutes to go. Scores were vital at this this stage but were hard to come by. With time running out, Daltons scored a cracking goal to knock us on our heels, and swing momentum in our opponents favour. However, our lads are made of stern stuff, and some tenacious tackling from our forwards forced a free in our favour forty yards from goal. Barry coolly slotted it over and we led by one with time almost up. Three long minutes of injury time were signalled as Daltons laid siege to our goals in search of the equaliser. But some resolute defending ensured the victory, and the day was ours. The final whistle was greeted with scenes of joy and emotion by players, mentors and our small band of supporters. It will go down as one of the best victories in a final that our club has ever seen. All the players displayed great character during the game but I have to give a special mention to the three young lads on the panel, Adam Bate (arguably the man of the match), Feichin Óg Brenna n and Brendan McCarthy, who performed way beyond their years in this victory. Obviously, the players deserve great credit for the achievement in the different climate we find ourselves in these days, but manager Barry Kennedy should be applauded for his work with the lads in the broken year that we had. Well done to all. Team: A.Savage, K.Orme, D.Grifferty, A.Bate, J.Nally, F.Óg Brennan, S.Savage, E.Nally R.Scally (0-2), C.Savage, S.McGovern (0-2), N.Yourell, B.McCarthy, B.Mcloughlin (0-1), B.O’Mara (0-9, 0-6 frees). Subs used: G.Brennan for Yourell, I.McGovern for McLoughlin, S.McCarthy for C.Savage, B.McLoughlin for G.Brennan, J.Kiernan for D.Grifferty.
