Westmeath GAA Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O. NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE: Westmeath hurlers play Down in the Semi-final of the Allianz division 2 league in Breffni Pk Cavan. This is a game Westmeath will want to win and progress to the final, with the first round of the leinster championship looming a good display is very important. Westmeath having topped their division will be hoping to continue their progression in the league, and with players like Paul Greville & Darren Mc Cormack In defence and Brian Smyth and Niall Kilcoyne up front a victory is on the cards. Verdict: Westmeath. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Westmeath senior footballers continued their Division 2 Campaign last Sunday with a win over Cavan in Cusack Pk. The game wasn't a classic and it took four minutes before the first score was registered, and with twenty minutes gone the score was only four points to two in favour of Westmeath. The introduction of Denis Glennon helped Westmeath's cause as he created open space with his off the ball movement. Cavan were guilty of wasting a lot of chances in front of goal and at the break the score was 0-05 each. The second half started much like the first with wing back Michael Ennis scoring the opening point again in this half. Cavan, although they tried hard never looked like troubling Westmeath in this half and only managed to score a single point. Denis Glennon notched up three fine points in this half and was ably helped by David Duffy, Micheal Ennis and Damien Healy. This win means that the last game against Monaghan will be one of the most important of the year with a chance of promotion to Division 1 for the winners. U-21 LEINSTER HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Westmeath U-21 hurlers started their Leinster campaign last weekend with a fixture against Wicklow in Kinegad. This was a match of two halves with Westmeath playing the first half with the aid of a strong wind and with some fine scores from Niall Kilcoyne lead by 0-14 to 0-03 at the break. Wicklow started the second half much brighter and with twenty minutes gone they had the defecate reduced to three points, helped largely by the fact that Westmeath faded out of the game at midfield. Westmeath notched up the games first goal from Luke Folan only to concede one to Wicklow within two minutes following a defensive error. Westmeath tagged on three further points to pull away and win on a final score of 1-17 to 1-10 WESTMEATH HURLING BOARD: Next Thursday night 10th April in the Greville Arms Hotel Mullingar at 8.00pm the Westmeath Hurling board will Honour the All Ireland Intermediate Champions Clonkill and the National Feile Division 2 winners Castleown Geoghean.
