The Paddy Cole Medal Collection
Paddy Cole is remembered as one of Mullingar Shamrocks and Westmeath’s s greatest players. Thanks to a lovely gesture by Paddy’s wife Alva, Paddy’s achievements will be forever remembered in Mullingar Shamrocks.
On Sunday last, Alva presented Chairperson David Nohilly with Paddy’s trophies and medal collection and other mementos of a remarkable football and hurling career.
The medals and trophies will form a permanent display in The Clubhouse and a suitable display cabinet is being prepared for their showing.
Alva also made a significant contribution to our Mullingar Shamrocks Development Fund for which we are most grateful.
Aviva Volunteer Squad visit Springfield
Mullingar Shamrocks were delighted to welcome a squad of 14 volunteers from the Aviva Pensions and Investment division to Springfield on Wednesday. Every Aviva employee is entitled to 21 hours of paid volunteer leave annually to support charities and charitable causes in what is a wonderful scheme. The Springfield squad included Galway senior hurling midfielder Tiernan Killeen; Jacob and Elise Buckley joined us from The Downs for the day and the entire Ledwith family also rolled up the sleeves.
Over several hours the squad engaged in a major clean-up of our grounds particularly of the Walking Track which was transformed from the Astro Turf to the corner of our training pitch as can be seen in the attached photograph. Some weeding and painting was also carried out.
Have we volunteers to finish the cleaning of the track? The point was made that it would make a great bonding exercise for an adult football team>
We appreciate the work of Niamh Ledwith in organising the visit of her fellow Aviva volunteers and of Joan Ormsby in managing the logistics for the day.
And a sincere thanks to the Aviva Volunteers for their great work.
Under-12 Girls play CFCW
The girls travelled to CFCW Gaa last night. The match was a true display of the skills the girls have been working so hard on during training this season. It was a joy to watch a team that was not afraid to call out, ask for help, run through, believe in their own abilities and most importantly believe in each other's abilities. For that is what a team truly does.
You will see from the smiling faces in pics to follow that the team had a great time playing last night. Thank you all for travelling it is a distance. But it was worth it. To all our girls starting Secondary this week, the very best of luck to you all from your coaches. Carry all the lessons you have learned from playing with your teams with you and we have no doubt you will all sail through this major change.
On Tuesday, June 30th, our U12 girls' team had a match against our close neighbors, St. Lomans in Springfield. It was pretty wet and slick out there for football because of all the rain showers throughout the day. But our girls really stuck with it and showed off some fantastic skills. The Shamrocks girls continue to get better with every single game. Well done girls!

Under-20 Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 3-13 St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge 0-9.
Not all matches played under the modern rules are classics. Jim Gavin and his band of disciples that formed the FRC weren’t capable of miracles but they went close. This game in Rochfortbridge failed to ignite and was dominated from start to finish by the blue and white stripped Mullingar Shamrocks – a link back to the time of the Pearse’s Hurling Club and all that hurling tradition.
Shamrocks led by 2-8 to 0-2 at the break with the goals coming from Hugo Corroon and Rory McCaul. The former goal began with a short restart from Adam Buckley to Ben McNamee who began a move that was finished by Hugo, one of the stars of the evening. The second goal came just before the break and extinguished any hopes of a Rochfortbridge recovery. Killian Mooney scored the third goal midway through the second half.
Shamrocks shot numerous wides, dropped several shots short and into a grateful goalkeeper’s hands and incredibly were penalized on three occasions for breeches of the three-men up rule. It was that kind of a match!
