Slevins Coaches SHAC - Round 5

Lough Lene Gaels........4.20 (32)

Clonkill..........................3.21 (30)

Lough Lene Gaels and Clonkill, as a consequence of their respective Round 4 fixture wins in the Slevins Coaches SHAC, realised that it would be very likely that they would go on to contest a semi final of the same competition, prior to concluding their respective Divisional fixtures, with a Round 5 fixture match, played at Mullingar's TEG Cusack Park on Sunday September 22nd.

Both clubs used up a full quota of sporting clichés, superlatives and sound bites, as regards the manner in which they contested this Round 5 fixture. Spectators who were late arrivals at TEG Cusack Park would definitely have missed the opening score of what turned out to be a magnificent Hurling match, a Clonkill goal scored by Luke Loughlin, and timed at 17 seconds. With 12 minutes of play elapsed, Clonkill 3.01 Lough Lene Gaels 0.04 was the match scoreline, a lead that Clonkill deserved.

David Williams scored a goal from a penalty award at the midway point of the second half, bringing Lough Lene Gaels back into match contention.

A second Lough Lene Gaels goal, a superb strike, came in the second quarter of play. At the end of a high tempo first half, Lough Lene Gaels 2.12 (18) Clonkill 3.08 (17) was the match scoreline, Lough Lene Gaels leading by a margin of one point.

Clonkill were splendid in the third quarter of play, playing gold standard Hurling, while outscoring Lough Lene Gaels 0.10 to 0.03 during that phase of play.

Leading Lough Lene Gaels on a 3.18 (27) to 2.15 (21) scoreline at the midway point of the second half, a margin of six points,  Clonkill looked set to go to close out this Round 5 fixture with a victory.

It was at the midway point of the second half that Thomas Doyle brought Lough Lene Gaels back into contention, scoring the third Purple and Golds goal with a crisp drive at the end of a solo run.

Clonkill though continued to maintain the match lead in their favour as normal playing time drew towards a close, Clonkill 3.20 Lough Lene Gaels 3.19, the match scoreline at the end of normal playing time.

A minute into stoppage time,Clonkill pointed directly from a placed ball situation to move 3.21 to 3.19. A minute later, Lough Lene Gaels scored their fourth goal of this high octane sporting occasion, Marcus Kennedy the goalscorer, leaving Lough Lene Gaels 4.19 (31) to 3.21 (30) ahead. Jordan Williams followed up with a point for the Purple and Golds, the final act in this Hurling contest.

Lough Lene Gaels and Clonkill do not have much time to reflect and look back at this Round 5 fixture, as both clubs will now in the close future contest a semi final fixture of the 2024 Slevins Coaches SHAC.

The semi final winners will then go on to play already qualified finalists Castletown Geoghegan
