Garrycastle  GAA Notes Sept 20th 2020

Under 15

Western Gaels 6-14 Kilbeggan Shamrocks / Milltownpass 2-04

Western Gaels were at home in Garrycastle in the U15 Shield (Div 2) Semi Final against Kilbeggan Shamrocks / Milltownpass.  It was a perfect Sunday morning for a game of football, with the sun shining and a slight breeze blowing down the pitch. The Western Gaels team started the game strongly, driving forward and taking a couple of fine scores. Shamrocks fought back strongly and quickly found an equalising score from a free to keep the game finely balanced. The Western gaels lads pushed on again, and dominated the next 15 minutes with numerous chances missed but tagged on a goal and a point before the first water break leaving the score 1-02 to 0-01.

The second quarter saw Western gaels being more direct and clinical with some fine play from the middle third of the pitch. They were relentless in running at Shamrocks and were rewarded with a further two goals and five points before halftime. A slight lapse in defence allowed Shamrocks to run through our defence and score a fine individual goal followed by a point, to leave the half-time score showing the home team ahead by 2-05, on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-03.

As the second half started, the game really opened up as Western gaels continuous pressure and running game produced some excellent scores. Western gaels dominated the second half all over the pitch and Shamrocks had no response to the speed and movement of our forwards. This was a great team performance and the link play was exceptional today. Well done to all involved and great to be in a County final in a few weeks.

U13 Cup Semi Final

Unfortunately our U13 squad were to finish second to a strong St. Lomans side on Saturday in Mullingar.  In ideal football conditions Garrycastle started slowly, going down 1-3 to 1 point in the first quarter. Missing some key players, the team regrouped and started to play some good passing football, in a similar manner to that which took them to the semi final.

Despite their best efforts they were not able to break down a very well organised St Lomans defence. Coming back to within 2 points at half time, the second half proved a different prospect. St. Lomans managed to hit the net a second time despite some strong goalkeeping from Garrycastle throughout the game.  Finishing 2-10 to 6 points this game will prove to be a great learning curve for this group of ambitious young players.

Under 12

Garrycastle played their first game in the Jim McHugh tournament during the week when they went down to the The Downs by 3-11 to 3-10 in a fantastic game of football. The feature of the game was a great  comeback by our lads which just fell short. In the first round Garrycastle defeated Tubberclair by 4-8 to 2-7. In the final games our lads play Cill Oige and the Downs  play Tubberclair. So plenty to look forward to.
