Kilrossanty clinch U21 title

April 07, 2011
Kilrossanty 2-10
Portlaw 1-9

A late Kevin Keating goal proved crucial as Kilrossanty saw off a second-half rally from Portlaw to claim the Under 21 B Football Championship title last Sunday at Fraher Field.

Kilrossanty put themselves in the driving-seat in this decider after 14 minutes when Paul Whyte latched onto a long ball from Niall Walsh and crashed the ball to the Portlaw net.

A Richie Fitzpatrick goal eight minutes later levelled the game, but the would-be winners put their foot on the throttle from then until half-time, with scores from Patrick Cunningham (2), Whyte (2) and William Brazil to lead by 1-8 to 1-3 at the break.

Kilrossanty hit two quick points to Portlaw's single early on in the resumption, but the trailers struck a purple patch which saw Paul Power lead the charge with some fine scores. It helped to bring Portlaw within a point, before Keating struck the goal which would prove to be a dagger in their hearts.

Power had a goal chance of his own in injury-time to bring his team back within one, but he was denied by a brilliant save from Dwyane Kirwan and it was enough for Kilrossanty to hold on for their first piece of silverware for 2011.
