Three first-half goals paved the way for New York to land their first ever Lory Meagher Cup title at Cavan’s expense this afternoon.

It finished 4-17 to 2-17 at Croke Park, where Tomas O’Connor, AJ Willis, Dara Walsh and 'Man of the Match' David Mangan (penalty) struck the Exiles goals as they promoted themselves to the Nickey Rackard Cup with back-to-back wins in the space of a week.

O’Connor’s goal saw Richie Harnett’s men move into a 1-3 to 0-4 lead and, while Cavan kept things close with the points of Liam O’Brien and Cillian Sheanon after that, goals from Willis and Walsh in the closing five minutes of the half saw New York head in at the break with a 3-11 to 0-13 advantage.

The Breffni men would have skipper Enda Shalvey black carded at the start of the second-half, as the full-back conceded a penalty which Mangan (1-7) tucked away to make it a 10-point game.

The New York lead was pushed out to 11 at one stage before Nicholas Kenny rattled their net in the 53rd minute. Aidan Organ and former Galway star Jonathan Glynn sent over points at the other end in reply, but they’d be wiped out by O’Brien’s penalty which gave a battling Cavan side hope in the closing stages.

Another point from captain Glynn steadied things for the Exiles however, as they won out by six in the end to claim an inaugural Lory Meagher Cup triumph at headquarters.
