SYDDAN 2-9 ST MICHAEL’S 0-12
GOALS proved crucial as Syddan secured promotion and a place in the Division 2 A league final following this clash of the table toppers at Carlanstown on Tuesday evening.
The goals arrived in the early stages of either half with the opener after just seven minutes. It followed a miscued pass from a St Michael’s defender which Cormac Rowe pounced on and finished to the net from close range. That score helped settle Syddan into the match after Sam Briody and Oran Meehan had earlier shot points for the hosts.
The second goal also arrived at an opportune time with Syddan ahead by two points at the time. After breaking up a St Michael's attack they went on the counter and Mark Fedigan provided the opening for Daire Rowe to score on 40 minutes.
Leading by five points, that lead was enough to sustain Syddan for the remainder of the contest.
The opening half was a closely fought affair with the teams level on three occasions before Syddan eventually led 1-6 to 0-7 at half-time.
Brian O’Reilly restored the lead for the home side following the concession of that early goal but the
Carlanstown outfit were playing catch up for most of the half. Daire and Cormac Rowe and Michael and Mark Fedigan kept the scoreboard ticking over for the visitors throughout the half.
Kevin Traynor extended the Syddan lead at the start of the second half and they were firmly in control following that goal from Daire Rowe.
The introduction of Ciaran Lynch added potency to the St Michael’s attack and he registered four of their five second half points.
They needed a goal to have a chance but they rarely threatened raising a green flag as the Syddan defence held firm.
Syddan only managed a point in the final quarter from Cormac Rowe but they never looked like relinquishing their lead at any stage.
