This weekend sees the delayed 2020 championships start in earnest but with weather warnings of storms and heavy rain, it will be nothing like we are normally used to.

If there is any upside to games being played behind closed door, it is the fact that supporters will not have to stand or, even worse, sit in the rain.

With weather warnings and incessant rain forecast on Saturday, Dungarvan, Clones, Croke Park and Semple Stadium would not have been inviting places to visit for fans. Fortunately the surfaces at all those venues should be more than able to handle the weather.

Sunday isn’t to be much better although the rainfall is expected to be lighter during the day. 

Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada, Cusack Park, O'Connor Park, Wexford Park, Semple Stadium, Ballybofey, Celtic Park and Pairc Ui Chaoimh will see action on Sunday.

While ground staff have been putting in a huge amount of work and pitches have seen less games this year, the pitches in Carrick-on-Shannon, Ballybofey and even the new Pairc Ui Chaoimh have had issues in stormy weather in the past.

Whatever happens, it will be a long way from those balmy summer championship days that we all dream of.
