Carlow pulled off a surprise to see off Tipperary in an entertaining tussle at Netwatch Cullen Park this afternoon, 1-12 to 1-10.

This was an impressive victory for Niall Carew's charges, who were beaten 2-16 to 0-11 by the same opposition when they met in the Allianz League two months ago, their reward being a place in the Tailteann Cup quarter-finals next weekend.

The opening score of the game was a Tipperary goal by Martin Kehoe in the ninth minute, and they led by 1-5 to 1-4 at the break.

Bouncing back from a five-goal thrashing to Louth in the Lenster SFC, the hosts responded strongly to that early setback and were right back in the hunt when Niall Hickey finished the ball to the Tipperary net before half-time.

The visitors started the second-half better, with a Sean O'Connell point doubling their advantage, but Carlow then enjoyed a dominant spell that yielded four unanswered scores via Ross Dunphy, Conor Doyle, Colm Hulton and Conor Crowley that saw them open up a 1-8 to 1-6 lead on 50 minutes.

Carew's side remained in the ascendancy as Hulton, Jamie Clarke and Sean Bambrick raised further white flags to keep their noses in front to the end.
