McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship Final

October 11, 2012
Doohamlet 0-12,
Tyholland 1-8.

Doohamlet were crowned intermediate football champions for the second time in three years when they had the narrowest of victories over Tyholland in a game that was largely a scrappy, free riddled affair, but one that built to a nervous climax with the sides level as the end of normal time approached. However Doohamlet had one last throw the dice and they ruthlessly punished Tyholland for losing possession as they came on a counter attack for Niall Connolly to hit the winner as the game went into stoppage time.

Doohamlet got off to much the better start and had built up a five points lead thanks mostly to the accurate free taking a Paul McArdle before Tyholland opened their account with a point from a free by Dermot Coyle in the 20th minute. Two further long-range free conversions by Paul McArdle helped Doohamlet to a five points half-time lead, Doohamlet 0-7, Tyholland 0-2.

Tyholland did some serious refocusing and re-jigging of the line out during the half-time break and they came out with renewed enthusiasm to the extent that they had reduced the margin to two points within five minutes of the resumption with three points, all from frees, two by Shane Treanor and one by Dermot Coyle. Doohamlet responded with points by Niall Connolly and another Paul McArdle special to go four up after 10 minutes but by the 20th minute they found themselves with a real game on their hands as Tyholland now playing with much more urgency struck a goal and a point within two minutes, to level the match, the goal by Raymond Ronaghan after an earlier attempt by Dermot Coyle had been parried by Doohamlet keeper James Casey. With nine minutes of normal time remaining Doohamlet re-took the lead through Paul McArdle but the sides were level again approaching the end of normal time when Tyholland's Shane Treanor converted a free and a replay looked on the cards. However fate had one last twist as a turn over saw Niall Connolly striking what proved to be the winner. Doohamlet now play the winners of ther preliminary round in the Ulster club intermediate football championship between the Cavan champions and the Derry champions in the quarter-final.
