Joe Smith Wolfe Tones

Baile Átha Troim CLG 2-14 – Bhulf Tón CLG 3-14

Tús maith ag an dara foireann sa chraobh le bua maith in aghaidh Troim i mBeag Teach maidin inné. Bhí said 8 bpointe chun tosaigh agus rinne Troim teacht aniar láidir ach d’éirigh leo an bua a bheith acu le 3 phointe ag an deireadh.

There’s no show like a Joe show, and this was the case in Bective on Sunday morning, as Joe Smith finished up with an impressive personal tally of 2-5 from Bhulf Tón’s 3-14 in their hard fought victory over Trim CLG.

Indeed it was Smith who opened the scoring with an excellent point from wide on the left and this was quickly followed with another sweet point by Brughach Ó Fionnagáin. The Tones then conceded a soft goal on 5 minutes when a high ball wasn’t dealt with and ending up in the Tones net, giving Trim a 1 point lead on 5 minutes.

Both teams then traded scores over the next 15 minutes and Trim lead 1-2 – 0-4 on 21 minutes. U-18 footballer, Shane McKeever upped the pace a little and hit two fine scores in the space of a minute, the purple and yellow regained the initiative and from this point onwards, Trim never regained the lead. Fellow U-18 footballer Rían Ó Fiannaidhe then hit another point after a mazy run, shortly afterwards the same man took off soloing  again and lobbed a pass towards Joe Smith who used all his trade craft to get on the ball and stick it in the Trim net, 1-7 – 1-3 on 30 minutes.

Trim lost possession on the subsequent kick-out, and another U-18 footballer, Adrian Crawford went on a surging run through the Trim defence and set up Joe Smith, who duly planted the ball to the net, to give himself two goals in a minute. Trim were rattled and when u20 footballer Rioghan Ó Beaglaíoch, fisted over after some lovely interlink play, it concluded a fantastic 10 minute spell for the Tones in which they scored 2-4 and went in at the break leading 2-8 – 1-3.

Playing against the breeze in the second half Dan Glynn hit an early score to put 9 points between the sides but Trim responded and scored 1-3 in a 10 minute spell to get it back to 2-9 - 2-6, a youthful Tones side looked to be struggling but Shane McKeever settled the nerves with a well worked score on 45 minutes and Brughach Ó Fionnagáín quickly followed with a well-executed goal after Trojan work by Dan Glynn to leave it 3-10 to 2-6 on 46 minutes.

A couple of Joe Smith scores looked to have the Tones in the driving seat on 52 minutes 3-12 – 2-8 but again a dogged Trim side rallied, hitting three in a row to get it back to a four point game. Joe Smith then hit a free from distance against the stiff breeze and when Rían Ó Fiannaidhe finished off a flowing move involving Alan Lynam and Jake McFadden, Tones looked home and hosed. The Trim men didn’t concur and they pushed everyone forward hitting three points on the bounce in the final 5 minutes, they pushed hard looking for an injury time equalising goal but the Tones rear-guard action held strong, and the final whistle brought an end to a most enjoyable game and  a valuable opening win for the Oristown parish side.

This was a great team performance by Bhulf Tón CLG. Youngster’s Adrian Crawford & Shane McKeever drove the side on when needed most, Rían Ó Fiannaidhe looked dangerous when on the ball, Dan Glynn & Jake McFadden put in savage work for the cause throughout, whilst the experience of Brughach Ó Fionnagáin & Alan Lynam blended well with the rest of the team, seven of whom were under 20. However, as the opening line says, there’s no show like a Joe show and his scoring and work rate throughout was a credit to Joe Smith at full-forward.

Compliments to the Bective GFC committee for being extremely well organised on the morning and having their grounds in pristine condition.
