HS Meath Awards: SFC footballer of the year

December 30, 2023

Summerhill's Ronan Ryan

The big question at the beginning of the year was could anyone end Ratoath’s dominance of the Meath’s senior football championship. Only Wolfe Tones had managed to break their control since their first Keegan Cup success in 2019.

Although not at their best they still advanced to the final, losing out to St. Colmcilles in the group stages, scraping over Dunshaughlin and Wolfe Tones in the quarter final and semi-final but 2023 was to be Summerhill’s year. Conor Gillespie’s charges had that steely determination to make up for all those final day disappointments since their last success in 2013. The final proved to be one of the best seen for years at Pairc Tailteann with the ‘Hill’ coming out on top after extra time.

There were plenty of standout performers throughout this year’s SFC camaign. Ciaran O Gallachoir, Thomas O’Reilly and Adam O’Neill (Wolfe Tones), Sean Coffey (Ballinabrackey), James Conlon (St. Colmcilles), Jack Flynn and Daithi McGowan (Ratoath), Padraig McKeever (Simonstown), Donal Lenihan (Dunboyne), Ruairi Kinsella and Mathew Costello (Dunshaughlin), Ethan Devine (Na Fianna), Barry Farrelly (Gaeil Colmcille), Andy Colgan, Bryan Menton and Dylan Brady (Donaghmore Ashbourne), Aaron Lynch (Trim) and Cathal Finnegan (Seneschalstown) all had their moments.

John Lavelle, Adam McDonnell, Ross Ryan Padhraig Geraghty, Adam Flanagan, David Larkin, Eoghan Frayne and Barry Dardis led the line with great effect for the champions but the team at HoganStand have gone for Ronan Ryan as our Senior Football Championship Player of the Year.

After a great season for the county seniors the talented full back brought all that form back to his club. A rock in the number 3 jersey and an inspiration to his team mates as Summerhill ended their recent heartbreak and brought the Keegan Cup back to the village for the first time in ten years.

Well done Ronan.
