IFC Group B: Good first half performance tips the balance in Michaels favour

August 28, 2023

St. Michaels keeper Conor Gilsenan gains possession against Blackhall Gaels

St. Michaels 0-10, Blackhall Gaels 0-08

A good first half performance tipped the balance in St. Michaels favour as they saw off a determined Blackhall Gaels side in a dour but hard faught encounter in Walterstown on Saturday evening last.

Shane McCormack opened the winners account with a point from play after five minutes, this was soon followed with the levelling point from the Gaels. Ronan Lynch put his side back in front from play two minutes later but Blackhall did likewise to draw level for the second time after eight minutes. Points followed from David Lynch, Matthew Halpin, Shane McCormack and J.B.O'Reilly which gave the St. Michaels lads a four point cushion at  the end of the first quarter. The Gaels added a further point before J.B. and Brian O'Reilly each posted a further minor apiece in the second quarter to give their side a five point lead at the short whistle.

Blackhall Gaels started the second half in blazing fashion with a point after 30 seconds, but that's where it ended and although they were the better side in what was a poor second half, 16 minutes elapsed before they got their next score, St. Michaels fared no better, it was all of 19 minutes into the new half before substitute Ciaran Lynch split the posts from a placed ball for their opening score of the half and their supporters were left frustrated watching them as their many scoring opportunities to build on their lead all sailed wide of the posts and it took Daniel Murphy to register their second score of the half three minutes into injury time.

Blackhall Gaels added a further three points (1f) in the second half as they gave it their all to cut the St. Michaels lead but time ran out on them. From this showing both teams will have it all to do in the relegation play-offs.
