IFC Group B: Castletown down Michaels in the 'Wood'

August 14, 2023

Shane McCormack goes highest for St. Michaels during the IFC clash against Castletown at Kilmainhamwood

St. Michaels 0-10, Castletown 1-13

Castletown departed Kilmainhamwood's fine facilities on Saturday evening last with their second brace of Group B points in the bag. The Castletown lads bonded much better as a unit and were well on the way to victory before the finish.

St. Michaels took all of 21 minutes to get their opening score on the board, a converted free from Shane McDonnell which was followed six minutes later by their first minor from open play. McDonnell completed the first half scoring for the Michaels with another point from a placed ball. Castletown kept the scoreboard ticking throughout the half and got a major boost with a goal in the 25th minute and they went on to lead by 1-6 to 0-3 at the short whistle.

St. Michaels now had the advantage of the wind in the new half and Felim O'Reilly got them off to a great start with a point from play after 30 seconds, however Castletown won their own kick-out and posted their 7th minor at the opposite end. Both sides traded points in the third quarter and Castletown lost their no 4 to a black card when he dragged McDonnell to the ground as he advanced on goal, McDonnell duly converted his own free but his side still trailed by six.

To add to St. Michaels woes they then lost Davy Lynch five minutes from time to a second yellow and although McDonnell, Shane McCormack and Brian O'Reilly all got on the scoreboard in the final quarter for St. Michaels it was Castletown who finished the stronger for a six point victory.
