U21 A HC: O'Mahony's remain unbeaten

The O'Mahonys Under 21 squad

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-19 St Patricks 0-10

Although confusion still reigns over who actually scored the goal, Navan O’Mahony’s made it three from three in the U21 HC at their Trim Road venue. St Patricks, who provided the opposition, got off to a great start but David Brady’s side proved too strong over the full sixty minutes, with eight different scorers on the day.

The first quarter of the game was largely one way traffic, with St Patricks looking in control of the game. The visitors opened the scoring and a point from play from Ed Nash was Navan O’Mahony’s only contribution to the scoreboard that quarter. Midway through the first half, it was for points to one in favour of St Patricks.

A four minute period saw Navan O’Mahony’s wipe away this lead and spring back into control with the lead. These scores all came from different players, with Darragh Connell, Finn Malone, Cormac Keyes and Sean McDermott all making their mark on the scoresheet. McDermott’s point came from a great play from Rio Russell to Jack Flynn and finally to McDermott who split the posts. St Pats soon answered with a point to draw the game, the last time the sides would be level.

In another strong period, Flynn and Shane McCarthy added their names to the scoresheet, while Malone and Keyes extended their earlier tally. As the clock was approaching thirty minutes, a losse ball in the square just couldn’t find the net. Multiple saves from the Stamullen netminder and backs denied the O’Mahony’s lads a goal before it eventually crossed the line. While McCarthy, Jack McConnell, McDermott and Malone all could reasonably make their claim for the penetrating shot, McConnell was the only one to contact the report writer and so receives the credit.

There was just enough time before half time for Keyes to convert a free, putting Navan O’Mahony’s in a strong position at the interval

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-10 St Patricks 0-06

Referee Eamon Barry had barely started his clock for the second half before Connell had scored a long range shot, getting his side off to a great start. Within five minutes of the throw-in, four more points had been added to Navan O’Mahony’s tally from Malone, Keyes and McDermott.

To their credit, St Patricks never gave up in spite of facing an uphill battle at this stage. Two converted frees and some strong play left the hosts having to fight hard to defend their lead, with Colm O’Toole, netminder Max Lafford, Finn McNally, the Cully brothers and Evan Brady impressive in this regard, as was substitute Jack Quinn when he made his way onto the pitch.

It was much of the same for the remainder of the half, with Navan O’Mahony’s having the edge over the visitors, managing to add further scores to their tally.  Although a quiet last quarter for both sides, the Brews Hill lads had done enough in the middle half of the game to secure the win.

Navan O’Mahony’s: Max Lafford, Thomas Cully, Finn McNally, Riordan Russell, Evan Brady, Darragh Connell (0-03), Evan Cully, Jack McConnell (1-0), Colm O’Toole, Cormac Keyes (0-08), Jack Flynn (0-01), Ed Nash (0-01), Finn Malone (0-03), Shane McCarthy (0-01), Sean McDermott (0-02)
