Heavy rain fell throughout the day on Saturday however it managed to clear up for players, management, and spectators alike for the 6:30 PM throw-in. This left a slippery surface on the pitch however it remained in great condition. The Nobber men started brightly with a nicely taken score by Sean Meade. The black and ambers backed this up by a great team move involving Jack Condra, Jojo Ogunbe, and Meade who blasted high into the Longwood net. Longwood responded with a score of their own, however, Paddy Bates’ charges kicked 4 unanswered points in the space of 8 minutes. Some excellent team play resulted in some great point taking from Lorcan McEntee, Jack Condra, and Thomas Murtagh. Longwood responded with 3 quick scores of their own. With 25 minutes gone on the clock, the black and ambers led 1 – 5 V 0 – 4. The magnificent Meade raised another white flag from a free and swiftly followed this up by causing havoc in the Longwood defence and raising yet another green flag. Both teams traded scores before the break and the black and ambers went in the happiest at half-time.
Half-Time Score – Nobber 2 – 7 Longwood 0 – 6
The Longwood men started the second half with intent with 3 unanswered scores of their own within the first 10 minutes. Full forward Declan Shields kicked a nice score for the Deesiders and this was followed up by a sweetly struck 45 by goalkeeper Dary Hutchinson. The Kildare border side put the Nobber men under serious pressure in the second half but the black and ambers defence stood firm and denied Longwood any goals. The full-back line of brothers Seamus and Eanna Fagan alongside Barry Cassidy were determined to keep a clean sheet. Nobber were leading by a point coming into the final few minutes. Up stepped the main man Meade who showed his true class when under pressure in the dying minutes sealed the win for the Nobber men by coolly slotting the ball past Harry Hogan in the Longwood goals.
Nobber showed huge determination throughout the 60 minutes and every player put in a great shift in terms of resilience, effort, and hard work. Their reward is a place in the last 8 of the championship.
