Clann na nGael crashed out of Cómortás Peile na Gaeltachta this morning in Leitir Móir. A last minute goal by Cill Chomáin snatched a place in the final tomorrow.
Both sides traded early scores before Clann took what looked like a massive step to victory.
Thómas Doyle scored two brilliant goals in the space of 90 seconds to leave 6 points between the sides. Doyle made an incredible direct run and finished superbly to the bottom corner for the first before getting on the end of a fine team move for his second. The Clann management made an early substitute bringing Conor Fenton in for Ruari Smith with 20 minutes gone. The Mayo outfit kicked two further scores before Thómas caught a great ball in and converted his mark brilliantly.
Cill Chomáin chipped further into Clann’s lead out scoring the Meath side by 3 points to 1 in the final 5 minutes of the first half. Doyle kicked one of the scores of the game for Clann during this period to leave them 2 points to the good at half time.
Clann burst out of the blocks at the start of the second half, with Gerry Sullivan bursting through and fouled in the box. Doyle hit the penalty brilliantly but Cill Chomáin goalkeeper pulled off an excellent save. The resulting 45’ was kicked over by Darragh Griffin to keep Clann ahead.
Cill Chomáin kicked three scores without reply, before Doyle once again steadied the ship for Clann. Doyle most definitely had one of the best performances of the tournament today with some outstanding scores.
Clann looked very dangerous when going forward, with well executed team moves slicing the Mayo outfits defence wide open on several occasions. In the 48th minute, Gerry Sullivan tore through the centre of the field, leaving the ball on a plate for Josh Mc Grath who finished to the net superbly for what looked to me a winning goal for Clann. A free shortly afterwards left the Athboy / Ráth Chairn side 4 points to the good with just 10 minutes left on the clock.
However this was to be their last score and Cill Chomáin rallied home scoring 1-4 without reply. The goal game in the 61st minute, leaving Clann ruing their missed chances from earlier in the game. Clann battled courageously till the end, but yet again it’s another year of Cómortás heartache for the club.
Best for Clann were Thómas Doyle, Eamon O’Donnchadha and Darren Kelly
