Rathkenny's Caolach Halligan

Rathkenny 0-13 Duleek/Bellewstown 3-13

The old adage “goals win games” was the harsh reality for Rathkenny on Wednesday night as they lost out to Duleek/Bellewstown.

Duleek/Bellewstown were very well drilled and from the off they cut through the Rathkenny defence and found the net almost immediately. They continued their blistering start and had notched another goal within minutes. Slow to start Rathkenny eventually got on the scoreboard through James Macken who had a very industrious evening in the middle third of the pitch. Rathkenny added further scores from the boot of Caolach Halligan. In the meantime Duleek/Bellewstown added another goal which was a hammer blow to the work Rahtkenny had done to get back into the game. James Macken then added his second point with an audacious effort off his left which rounded off Rathkenny’s first half scoring.

Rathkenny were determined to improve in the second half and they raced out of the blocks with Louis Timmons pointing from a tight angle after a great team move. Rathkenny continued to put together some great flowing moves which resulted in the next 4 points of the game and dragged them back into contention. Keith Timmons and Brian Meade both took points well during this purple patch and Robbie Garry’s runs from deep gave them a great platform for these attacks. Caolach Halligan was then fouled while shooting for goal and Rathkenny were awarded a penalty. Unfortunately the goalkeeper was equal to Louis Timmons’ effort and Duleek/Bellewstown worked the ball away from danger to end the third quarter. Rathkenny continued to battle hard and can be happy with their spirited 2nd half performance but could not find a way back into the game and rounded off their scoring with a point from Caolach Halligan.
