BALLINLOUGH 1-10 SYDDAN 0-6
A DISAPPOINTING Corn na Boinne campaign came to a losing end for Syddan as they suffered a comprehensive defeat in Ballinlough on Wednesday evening.
It was a glorious evening for football and Syddan were ahead following a Ben Blakemore point on three minutes. However it all unravelled for the visitors after that as Ballinlough's greater cohesion, and strong running soon had the Syddan men in bother.
Jamie Cassidy opened the scoring for the hosts with a point and they were boosted by a fortuitous goal on seven minutes when Benji Smith's looping effort deceived keeper Ben Bashford and ended in the net.
Harry Ryan (free) and a fisted effort from Smith stretched the Ballinlough lead before Shane Carpenter scored the first of his five points from a close range free. That left it 1-3 to 0-2 at the first water break.
Carpenter added points from play and a free before the end of the half but it was the home side who deservedly led 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time following a dominant second quarter. Ryan (three) and Casserly were on target for the 'Lough in that period and they would have been much further ahead if they had taken half of the chances created.
Ballinlough might have had a second goal on the restart but this time Bashford made a fine block to deny Casserly.
The teams just managed one score between them in the third quarter, a point from lively full forward Smith. Further scores from Darragh Caffrey and Michéal Geraghty left it 1-10 to 0-4 on 52 minures.
Their best player Carpenter ended a lack-lustre display from Syddan with points on 53 and 57 minutes.
