1996 was a brilliant year for the hurlers of Rathmolyon. For the second time in their history The Village claimed the Senior Hurling Championship title at the expense of Kilmessan.
It was also a very special year for rising Meath star Mike Cole. The talented forward scored five points in that win over Kilmessan but we bring you back to March of that year for the delayed 1995 Under 21 Special Hurling Championship final.
Rathmolyon and Killyon combined to produce an enthralling hours play that had the attendance captivated right up to the final whistle. Cole’s goal at the death proved the difference between the teams. It would have been a travesty if Cole was on the losing side as he was marvellous throughout totting up a total of 1-9 before the close of play.
Rathmolyon led 1-9 to 2-1 at the break but had to withstand a fierce Killyon fightback in the second half to hold on for a 2-12 to 4-5 victory.
Along with Cole, Jonathan Murray, Paul Heffernan, Eamon Regan and Michael McManus were outstanding.
Rathmolyon: J. Whelan, K. Murray, P. Boggin, C. Dunne, J. Murray, P. Heffernan, G. Cole, E. Regan, N. Cole 0-1, M. Cole 1-9, S. Ennis, P. Gantley, P. O’Brien 1-1. Sub: M. McManus 0-1
24 years later and Mike Cole was still lining out for The Village, coming on as a sub in last years IHC quarter final against Trim.
