Passing of a Kells Lady

January 25, 2021

The late May Caffrey

The death has taken place of well known Kells business woman and GAA supporter, May Caffrey.

She was a huge follower of  Meath teams and with her good friend Kay Gogarty travelled to the four corners of the country in support of The Royals, both hurling and football.

May was a talented camogie player in her youth while her brother Benny devoted long hours to the Meath County Board, particularly the Minor Board of which he was the efficient secretary for countless years. The annual winners of the Meath under 16 championship are presented with the Benny Caffrey Cup, a trophy gifted to the Meath County Board by the Caffrey sisters.

In recent years May Caffrey was a familiar sight around the north Meath town and especially out the Cavan road walking her beloved dogs. However May's real link with  popularity came as the owner of a very busy confectionery shop in Kells.

Based opposite the Round Tower, it was the usual hive of activity, from early morning till late in the evening. Helped by her sister Philo, all things were discussed in May's establishment, not least happenings in the GAA world.

And then there was the ice cream machine. When your turn in the queue came there was the usual question ''Now, is it a cone or a ninety nine''. As they said around Kells and still do ''You can't bate Caffreys for the ice cream.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
