Meath Gaels were saddened to hear of the passing of former Meath and Kilbride great Gerry Quinn on Sunday. His death comes three days after the passing of another ’67 star Terry Kearns.

Kilbride GFC Executive Committee pay tribute to one of their former greats.

Kilbride GFC and the surrounding area were saddened to learn on Sunday morning that Club President Gerry Quinn had passed away peacefully. 

Gerry doesn’t need much introduction in Kilbride or in Meath. His involvement in the club goes back decades. He was member of the 1967 All Ireland winning Meath team who defeated Cork. 

The Red and Green of Kilbride was always close to Gerry's heart

A holder of numerous Keegan and Feis Cup medals with Kilbride during the clubs golden years . A distinguished player, husband, father and brother who leaves behind a legacy on and off the field and a family that can be so proud of him and his achievements. 

Gerry will be sadly missed by all at the club and right up to his recent illness Gerry was still checking up to see how our recent GYM development was going.

To mark the 50th anniversary of that ’67 win we penned, three years back, a little complimentary piece on each of the players. Gerry's went thus

Gerry was an outstanding right full forward with a great eye for goal. An able substitute in 67, he wore the number 13 in the 66 loss to Galway and was outstanding against Down in the semi-final the previous month as his brace of goals played a major part in downing the Mournes.

Gerry also lined out against the Dubs in the 1964 Leinster decider.

Just picture the back drop to that provincial decider as remembered by a nine year old boy. Dublin were the All Ireland champions. Before throw in rumours spread amongst the huge Meath contingent that the Quinn's father (remember that three of his sons were playing) had sadly passed away the night before. In other words the Quinn's would not be available. Imagine the relief when Martin, Jack and Gerry all ran out onto the Croke Park sod.

Mr. Quinn senior was indeed gravely ill, he was anointed on the Saturday night and sadly died the following Wednesday. However he insisted that the boys lined out for their county. Needless to say all three played a starring role. 

The stuff of legends, loyalty to the cause, love for a father, how important the Quinns were to Meath. Enough to bring a tear to the eye.

Funeral Details

Peacefully, in the wonderful care of the staff of Newpark Care Centre, the Ward, Co. Dublin. Beloved husband of Maureen and father of Tanya, Gordon, Janette and Geraldine and brother of the late Gertrude. Gerry will be sadly missed by his family, brothers Martin, Jimmy and Jack, his sister Brenda, sons-in-law Michael, Darren and Gerard, daughter-in-law Mary, his twelve grandchildren, his extended family, relatives and friends.

Gerry's family would like to invite you to accompany them as his Funeral Cortege leaves his home at 10.30am on Wednesday to St Brigid's Church, Kilbride, arriving for 11am Funeral Mass and afterwards to the burial in Kilbride Cemetery. Please adhere strictly to social distancing guidelines. Attendance in the church will be restricted in line with current guidelines but Gerry's Funeral Mass can be followed on youtube.
