Senior Camogie: Poor start for Blackhall Gaels

August 18, 2020

Meath and Blackhall Gaels star Jane Dolan

Dunderry 0-08 to Blackhall's 0-05

Blackhall headed to Dunderry last Sunday to seeking a strong start to their camogie championship campaign.

The girls were under furious pressure, with Dunderry hitting hard from the get go. At the water break Blackhall regrouped and started stronger with good middle third play setting up several strong balls into the full forward line of Ciara Whitty, Aileen Coyle and Helen Murphy. Coyle was substituted due to injury before the end of the half, leaving Blackhall's youngest forward, Orla Flynn, to take up her position for the duration of the game. Unfortunately the Dunderry backs proved their own worth and despite the strong display the half time score was Dunderry 0-05 to Blackhall's 0-02.

At the restart the Blackhall defense was put under increasing pressure as Dunderry ran the ball on top of our full back line. Between the ever reliable Kate Murphy and the Trojan horse that is Amy Crosbie, Dunderry had to settle for long range points. Emily Mangan, true to form kept the ball clear of the goal mouth anytime things started to look dangerous. Siobhan Whitty and Kristina Troy kept the balls pumping into the forwards where Jane Dolan and Suzanne Kelly slotted over some stunning points.
The final quarter saw Blackhall finally come into their own and put the foot all the way down. Helen and Ann Murphy along with Niamh Keane and the two Kelly sisters moved the ball into the forwards as quickly and often as possible praying for that bit of magic. But a few hard calls, tough hits and championship jitters left the girls short at the final whistle. The final score was Dunderry 0-08 to Blackhall's 0-05.

The girls now face Kilmessan in a must win game this coming week, details TBC.
