Oldcastle to walk for 24 hours for new juvenile pitch at Millbrook

The fantastic new facilities under construction at Millbrook

For many decades, the home of Oldcastle GFC was the pitch in Gilson Park. Some twenty years ago it was realised that the pitch there wasn't sufficient anymore, with the club growing and the establishment of Oldcastle Ladies GFC. Years of planning and hard work from all involved in the club at that time led to land at Millbrook being purchased, and a beautiful pitch and clubhouse being developed there, and officially opened in May 2010.

For the past decade Millbrook has been an invaluable addition to the club: a main pitch to be proud of, with the Gilson Park also in regular use. The club continues to grow however, with over 200 juvenile players plus our Senior teams requiring regular training and matches. Once again the club found the pitches under pressure! The solution they are now working on is a fantastic new juvenile pitch at Millbrook.

The club are also extending the existing walking track to go around the new pitch, including hills and a beautiful section alongside the river Inny. Ambitiously, they are also planning to landscape the pitch-surrounds as a Bio-Diversity garden: both to help the local wildlife and encourage habitats, and as an educational facility for our children to learn more about their environment. The aim is that Millbrook will be more than just a GAA pitch: it will be a beautiful place to come and take a walk or sit and chat, as well as watching or playing GAA!

With this in mind, Oldcastle GFC are running a 24 Hour Walkathon at Millbrook over the Bank Holiday Weekend. Sponsored by the local Oldcastle Credit Union, it is hoped that nearly 600 people will walk around Millbrook in teams of 24, over the 24 hours from 6pm Saturday August 1st to 6pm Sunday August 2nd. All money raised will go towards finishing this super project. Oldcastle GFC would like to invite anyone who wishes to take part to come to Millbrook pitch between those hours, or for anyone who would like to donate, please go to the facebook page "Oldcastle Juvenile Gaa" where there is a Go Fund Me page set up.
