The past number of days have seen the departure from this life of well known Meath Gaels, M. J. McGearty, Joe McKeown and Patsy O Sullivan.
Joe McKeown was popularly known as ' Red Joey ' to distinguish him from his cousin of the same name and after whom the pitch in Kilberry is named.
Joe possessed a razor sharp left foot and was an outstanding right full forward on the St. Johns' team which swept to Meath intermediate honours in 1974.
It was said on manys the occasion that Michael Joseph, but better known as MJ, McGearty was the very heart beat of the Ballivor club. MJ's brother was the Meath goalkeeper on the 1954 All Ireland winning team.
A reformed Drumree claimed Meath junior championship honours in 1959 and two years later won the intermediate title. Patsy O Sullivan, who operated either at wing half back or midfield, was one of their star players. He was laid to rest in Culmullen on the last day of January.
May God be good to them.
