Kildalkey represent Meath with pride in Mullinahone

August 27, 2018

A happy Meath (Kildalkey) captain Josh Walton with the Tess McNamara Cup

Kildalkey GAA were invited to represent Meath in the Annual Mullinahone Inter-County Festival of Hurling for U12s.

The festival has a strong tradition with representation from all over Ireland. This year's competition included teams from Tipperary,  Cork, Clare, Waterford, Galway, Roscommon, Carlow, Meath, Monaghan, Derry, Tyrone and Antrim.

Meath started off with a great win over Monaghan. Goals from Josh Walton, James Cully and Conor Barnwell proved the difference in the two teams. Meath 4-3 Monaghan 0-3.

Meath were too strong for Derry in their 2nd match. A great team effort helped the forwards get Meath their 2nd win. Camsròn Smyth was strong and solid in full back in all games and his inventive puck outs outwitted the opposition. Mark Hand & Conor McNally were huge in the backline, giving Derry no room to play. 4-03 Derry 1-01

The final match of the league section was against a strong Tipperary side. The opposition had learnt from our earlier games and marked our forwards very tightly. Tipperary were very quick with their hooks and blocks, making scores very difficult. Thomas McGee, Jamie Kavanagh and Michael Carr battled in the midfield to keep Meath in the game. Tipperary shaded the match despite a great effort from Meath. Meath 0-3 Tipperary 0-6.

Meath had done enough to progress to the semi final of the Tess McNamara Cup where they were to meet Carlow. Meath proved too strong for Carlow, in a very one-sided affair. Cian Walsh-Gibbons, Ryan Kealey, Billy Bermingham and Dermot Keogh were best upfront while James Smyth and Dylan Corrigan battled to keep the Carlow scores down. Meath 3-09 Carlow 0-01.

Next up for Meath was the final with last year's Champions Antrim. The Glensmen could not deal with the triple strike force of James Cully, Josh Walton and Conor Barnwell. Paddy Casey showed again his reliability in goals with some great stops. Camsròn kept his very best for last and continuously cleared his lines with skill and physicality.  Conor McNally and Mark Hand ruled both wings with maturity beyond their age. Tom McGee, Michael Carr and Jamie Kavanagh marshalled the midfield, winning the majority of the action. Despite a questionable penalty in the last minute, the lads held on for the win 5-4 to 3-2.

Josh Walton received the Cup for Kildalkey and Meath.
