Tweak To Championships

(Oldest Posts First)

I believe a minor tweak to the football championships would enhance them.
To bring them in line with Sam Maguire I suggest that only the bottom team in the 4 team groups go to relegation and the 3rd team stay in the championship playing in a pre lim quarter final in open draw v 2nd team with group toppers straight to quarter finals.

I think certain teams like Don/ash very unlucky not to qualify would have added to Senior knockout as would kells, Trim and possibly Na Fianna or even at Intermediate where Duleek where possibly the unluckiest team of all going out on a 1 point score difference rule.

I agree. Still plenty of jeopardy if you did it this way because 9/10 times going into the last game the bottom team will be able to catch the 3rd place team at lease therefore would know a win keeps them out of relegation as well as getting them a preliminary 1/4 final and the same goes for the 3rd place team who know they can also end up in relegation. At the very least they should scrap this nonsense of the 3rd place teams being in relegation and having relegation 1/4 finals .

The problem is the groups are completely unseeded, so you get lobsided pairings as a result. The previous years 8 quarter finalists should be seeded in my opinion to bring some balance to the groups - semi finalists in one pot, and quarter finalists in another pot.

So each group would contain a semi finalist, a quarter finalist, and 3rd and 4th finishers from the previous year.

And yes I have always been against the bottom 2 going into relegation playoff, it should be just the 4th place teams, 3rd place becomes meaningless.

Couldn't agree more, I have been screaming for a seeded draw the last 3 years.

Such potential for an imbalanced championship.

Can you image this next year

Group A

Dunshaughlin
Dunboyne
Summerhill
Ratoath

Group B

Senchalstown
Ballinabrackey
Meath Hill
Kells

Junior championship hasn't enough teams. This year some teams only played three championship games. That's no good for development of these teams. Same could be said of Junior B. Expect there is some room here for merging as surely Kilmainhamwood, St Mary's, Moynalty, Clonard and Boardsmill capable of playing the Junior grade. Should be a 16-18 team competition with every team getting at least 5 championship games. Junior championship with 2nd teams involved used to be a much better competition with a high number of games.
