No Club In Johnstown

(Oldest Posts First)

Travelled through the area with a friend from Navan last night. A very unusual type of town or suburb. Row after row of houses and kids everywhere on the street. Astonished to be told that there was no GAA club in the area. And this is Meath we are talking about, a very strong GAA county. Why is there no club in Johnstown, even a start up juvenile club?

Think you are looking for a rise. johnstown is in waltertown parish. Failing that kids can choose to play with Bective, o'mahonys or even simonstown. All clubs within 2 miles.

No I am certainly not looking for a rise. I am deadly serious and curious why there is no team in this area. Has to be 10,000 plus people living there. What parish is Johnstown in. I s there not a parish rule in Meath? Surely the children could not have such a collection of clubs to choose from?

Agree that looking for a rise. There has been outstanding work done by Walterstown for children in Johnstown. If there not with Walterstown then they may have been picked up by 1 of other Navan clubs..

Seems like I stirred a nest of hornets here. I never intended to. But could I ask Foley91 how could a boy from Johnstown which you said was in Walterstown parish play for O Mahoneys or Simonstown or Bective?

In this day and age I cant see too many clubs turning kids away cause they live in a certain area of the town.

20 or 25 years ago these rows of houses you talk about weren't there. Johnstown was a small "church and two pubs village" surrounded by green fields. The whole development is brand new, and growing ever larger by the year. I agree, a strange place. A concrete jungle. Not much there but housing and apartments, and a small shopping area and endless streams of kids and young adults it seems. I guess a GAA club never had the time to set up and in the last 5/10 years Johnstown and Navan have met and are one in the same so there really isn't any need. In fact Johnstown as a whole is low on all amenties. Walterstown is the catchment area GAA team. Lads from Johnstown/Athlumney have also played for other town teams, as previously mentioned. Navan is a big spot and the parochial thing is sort of a thing of the past there.

Would Johnstown be In navan parish with omahonys simonstown walterstown and bective all in the parish therefore plenty to choose from Walterstown would probably be the closest club to johnstown area I think

Ah Lads not this old chestnut again.

The local club is Walterstown and its Johnstown and Walterstown parish.

Kids in Johnstown play with Walterstown.

End of discussion.
