Replying To WhyTheLongFace:  "They were talked about...won all stars and a player of the year award ! Their was buzz in Kildare when Mcgeeney was in charge ! If you can cast you're mind back Ziggy hoganstand had a lot more Kildare posters on hoganstand back then also ! Thats all you need if you never really had much to begin with !

If Andy had the same kinda success as Mcgeeney (4 quarter final appearance, all ireland semi final..division 1 football) ...would you not be happy enough Bunny Ziggy ?"
fair points, spose that is generally the best kildare do. :)

I think the best thing Gaa could do right now to help a lot of counties develop to a better all round standard of football would be to have 3 divisions in the league rather than have 4 divisions...all this talk about division 1 football been the best standard and it's the place to be for teams to become better why not let more teams in it ! Increase Division 1 football to 11 teams ...means 10 games each Instead of 7..get rid of the O'Byrne cup and others..play 2 league games in January... 3 in February..3 in march and then 2 in April, and the league still finishes up at the same time as normal ! Play your O'Byrne cup during April and May the same way you play meaningless challenge matches during that month !
.......................
Division 1 football would look like this..

Division 1
Dublin
Kerry
Donegal
Monaghan
Mayo
Tyrone
Cavan
Roscommon
Galway
Kildare
Meath
......................

if you want to increase the standard of football for a lot of counties without pumping money into it increase the size of division 1 football !

What's going to happen is the gaa going to have to spend millions on under age structures every year in a couple years time for every county...it's just going to be a big black hole for that money.. they would save millions with just a signature of a pen by making Division 1 bigger !

The little people with the little ideas will ask how would a better standard of football make a team better :/

I am waiting......

I think that is quite an interesting post. How about expanding it and using the level at the end of the league to dictate the teams in a tiered championship?

So, say there are 12 Division 1 teams, 12 Division 2 and 10 Division 3 teams (including London & New York who prob wont compete in the league). Have a promotion and relegation situation of 2 up and two town between those tiers and then base the tiered championship based on the positions of those teams at the end of the league.

So senior inter-county would be from div 1, intermediate from div 2 and junior from div 3. (as an aside get away from naming these competitions and GAA guys). then divide into 2 groups of 6 in the case of senior IC and play each other & top 2 in each group go into all ireland semis.

In my opinion that wold be more straightforward than the curent lob sided provincial championships and this super 8.

So you suggest to increase Div 1 to numbers where Meath could get in. If we were ranked 16th you would go for 2 divisions of 16 ?? 11 teams means 1 team lying idle every round and in all honesty would you honestly say it would do the likes of Meath any good bring beaten out the door every week

Between 2007 and 2010 (4 seasons) Meath won 1 Leinster, reached 3 All Ireland Quarter finals and from this reached 2 All Ireland Semi finals. That run was better than what Kildare did under McGeeney. I suppose Kildare, with their traditional lack of success, were more excited by what they did during McGeeneys time.

At the moment I think a 11 team division 1 would suit Meath fine, we would find it hard in an 8 team division 1 and most likely would be relegated the first year we were in it but in an 11 team division 1 we would have a few other teams of our standard. Still we could not really expect the GAA to design a system just to suit our current standard, rather we need to improve and be good enough for the top division that is in place.

Make it 12 teams or 10 teams it's not the end of the world, I said make the standard of football for everybody better ! I never mentioned Meath in my post that "do it for Meath" "It will make Meath Better" i was talking about everyone ! Just replace Meath with Cork and that should make you happy,I will put Meath and Andy in division 3 just for you :)

But another year for Roscommon and Cavan playing at higher level of football would be great for the two counties,i just think having more teams having more experience longer in division 1 would be great ..because only 6 teams stay up every year it's would be better to increase the bracket of the teams staying up so making the Division 1 have 10 teams might improve a lot of teams .

Again remove Meath from you're thoughts ...my idea on division 1 has nothing to do with Meath, maybe if i had Carlow or Mongolia instead of Meath after my name you might actually have liked my idea ..

i actually like that idea oldsam_newsam ,not bad at all bud

Here is a thought ...if a county wins the all Ireland they go directly into the super 8 for next year instead of playing in the provincial championship .

So if Dublin win the ireland in 2017 they go directly into the super 8 2018..so that means leinster will be a competition without Dublin next year 2018 !

I don't like the way of thinking that it would be good for Meath/ rest of Leinster if Dublin were put out of Leinster championship. Meath need to get our own house in order, we have a lot going for us and if we get the structures right can be competitive, we have a lot of GAA clubs, growing population and a good football tradition.

the biggest issue in meath is the huge numbers that drop off playing by the age of 18.

It is interesting to see some posters suggesting that by increasing the number of teams in Div 1 you improve the standard of football and more interesting that many posters were saying the complete opposite for our own county championships-which is it? You improve the standard by having:
(a) a system where the weaker teams get more championship matches (and how that is worked out is up for debate)
(b) making sure whatever system is devised that all teams have the opportunity (in beginning of the year) to compete in the AI. This could mean that the 16 weaker teams (or whatever number is deemed best, could be 24) play in a group with 4 teams going forward to complete in knockout stages.
(c) looking seriously at moving away from provincials - this year we have a situation where some of the weaker teams in the country are still in the championship because of the province the compete in.

Whatever system is devised needs to be such that the weaker teams get as many matches as the teams getting into the semi-finals- competitive matches improve teams whereas challenge matches are a complete waste of time.

Ziggy, I read this article you pasted on another thread seems very honest and interesting.
Wonder who is he referring to in this section ?

"I've been to a lot of games in my life, and this was the first time I saw a player at county level not really make much effort at all. One Meath forward spent most of the game hovering around the centre-forward position, and made little to no effort to get involved in the play. If his man was passed the ball he'd jog over to him but in the entire match I would say he reached maximum effort only three or four times. Even with his teammates running closeby him, he never looked for a pass but twice. Up until he was substituted with about 15 mins left to play, Meath effectively had only 14 players. Clearly something was mentally or physically wrong with the player and I hope this can be remedied as he has serious talent. "

Why is this thread even still up. ?
We need to move on, talking about Kildare, what we did wrong or what we did right will do us absolutely no good come 6pm on Saturday. All Tha matters now is Sligo. Forget about this game. Get behind Andy graham and the whole team on Saturday is all that matters.
In fact what help would have been getting beat by dubs by 10 and then facing Donegal or mayo have been to us? At least now if we face them it will be after a win.

I agree the thread should be finished! But I strongly don't agree with the attitude of losing to Kildare and your other points ! Royaldunne I think your taking the mick there ! But anyway I do think forget about Kildare nothing more to be talked about !
