September 01, 2012

Castletown's Jonathan Metry beats Ballivor's Richie Sherrock to the ball during the Meath IFC game at Martry
Castletown 0-11
Ballivor 1-7

Super sub Kenny Smith was the toast of Castletown this evening when coming off the bench to kick the winning point in the final minutes of this entertaining IFC game at Martry.

Ballivor came into this tie not having played a championship match in well over three months. The rustiness didn't show in the first half as the 2011 Junior Championship winners dominated most of the proceedings. Thos Raleigh got their opening score before Noel Kirby finished to the Castletown net and a point from Adam Gannon had Ballivor 1-2 to 0-0 up after ten minutes. Castletown introduced veteran Michael Hickey to the midfield sector and this had the desired effect. Three points from Tommy Smith and one from Barry Smith had them four down at the break 1-5 to 0-4.

Ballivor had alot of possession early in the second half but wasted many chances. In contrast Castletown kept plugging away and more importantly kept taking their points. Kevin Ross got their opener of the second period before Keith Keogan pointed for Ballivor. Castletown had the lead down to one with scores from Ross, Darren Finney and a great effort from Shane Farrelly. Thos Raleigh put two between the sides again before Ross sent over a brace of frees to level matters. As the game appeared to be heading for a draw substitute Kenny Smith won possession and sent over a great point to seal a very important win for Castletown.

The winners sit on top of group B with six points from four outings and have done enough to qualify from the division.

Castletown scorers: Kevin Ross (0-4), Tommy Smith (0-3), Darren Finney, Shane Farrelly, Barry Smith and Kenny Smith (0-1) each.

Ballivor scorers: Adam Gannon and Thos Raleigh (0-3) each, Noel Kirby (1-0), Keith Keogan (0-1).
