Bective/Rathkenny came out on top in this Minor Football Championship Division 5 final played in wet and windy conditions at Fr. McManus Park Skryne.
In a low scoring first half Bective/Rathkenny took a 1-5 to 0-1 lead to the dressing room at half time. Full forward Jack Johnson got the scoreboard working and soon after Eoghan Moore struck for the games first goal. Bobby Curtis added a two pointer and a single and Bective/Rathkenny were in control. Boardsmill/Longwood’s problem was in front of goal and they had to wait until the 25th minute before William Phillips opened their account.
Curtis and Dean Phillips traded points in the early stages of the second half before Bective/Rathkenny put the game to bed. Johnson landed a monster two pointer before Curtis and Thomas Knowles were in for match winning goals. To their credit Boardsmill/Longwood kept going and their best spell in the game was rewarded with points from Dean and William Phillips and Daragh Purcell. Curtis had the last say with another two pointer before referee Cormac Reilly blew the full time whistle
After the game Trevor Giles presented the cup to joint captains Liam O’Brien and Thomas Connell.
